About the Item
Noted German Expressionist artist Fritz Schwaderer, was classically schooled in fine art in Germany in the early-mid 1920’s. Schwaderer’s paintings were exhibited alongside such artists as Beckman, Nolde, Kandinsky and Jawlensky.
Schwaderer settled in California where he worked and exhibited until his death in 1974.
Dody in the Afternoon is the artist’s portrait of actress Dody Goodman, painted in bright vivid hues, signed, c.1955. Schwaderer’s paintings always reflected his German Expressionist roots.

Franz Bergmann 1898 - 1977 Franz Walter Bergmann was born on August 6, 1898, in Dimling, Austria, a town northwest of Vienna. His parents were both involved in the arts: his mother was a pianist, and his father was an amateur artist and a violinist. After serving in World War I for three years, he enrolled in the National Academy of Art in Vienna and embarked on a seven-year course of study, focusing on figure painting and portraiture. Although schooled in the academic tradition, Bergmann also adopted elements derived from the more avant-garde German Expressionist style. By 1924 he was exhibiting in Vienna and Stockholm. The following year, he graduated with honors. He left Vienna to tour Europe, and in early 1926 he traveled to the United States. After a brief stay in New York, he moved to Chicago, where he obtained a commission to paint murals for theaters owned by Balaban & Katz. Bernard Harmon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1935. Harmon was primarily a portrait painter and a well loved teacher in the Philadelphia area. A graduate of the Philadelphia Museum School and Temples Tyler School of Art, Harmon traveled extensively in Europe and South America. Beloved by many, Harmon taught in the Philadelphia School District for 32 of his 54 years of life. Beginning his career as an art teacher at West Philadelphia High School, in the early 1960s he became one of the district's artists in residence, traveling from school to school to demonstrate for students how an artist works.
