The penetrating portrait presented here offers us the image of an elderly Genoese widow with a wrinkled face marked by time and enclosed in a large black veil. The strong use of colour in dramatic tones and mellow, energetic brushstrokes has prompted critics to attribute this painting to Giuseppe Assereto, son of the famous Gioacchino.
