About the Item

Madonna in Sorrow Italian School, mid 19th century after the 17th century Old Master oil painting by Sassoferrato (Uffizi, Florence) Oil on canvas, unframed Canvas: 29.5 × 25 inches Provenance: private collection, UK Condition: Good condition with age-related wear. Please refer to the photographs for further details. A beautiful and atmospheric 19th century Italian oil painting depicting the Madonna in sorrowful contemplation prayer, portrayed with her head gently bowed and hands clasped together in devotion. Painted after the 17th century work by Sassoferrato which now hangs in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence, the artist has concentrated attention on the Madonna herself, using soft modelling and restrained tones to convey the delicacy of her features and the folds of her clothing. The simplicity of the composition enhances the intimate devotional character of the painting. Paintings of the Madonna in prayer have a long history within European religious art, intended both as objects of devotion and as representations of humility, purity and maternal grace. A decorative and evocative religious painting with a timeless Old Master character, well suited to both traditional and eclectic interiors.
