About the Item

An exceptional portrait of a woman reading a book on a sofa was painted by American artist Louise Williams Jackson (1872-1939). Born in Newton, Massachusetts in 1872. She and her family moved to Minnesota when she was young, for several years, as her father followed a business opportunity. Between 1894 and 1895 she moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, re-enrolling at the MFA. During her time at the MFA, she had an opportunity to study under James Abbott McNeill Whistler, in Paris, while studying abroad. She was an artist of the Arts Student League of New York, graduated from the MFA School of Drawing and Painting, Boston, was a member of the Copley Society and the Guild of Boston Artists. Louise also received honorable mention at the 1908 Boston Art Club and a solo exhibition at the Fogg Museum in 1928. Although her talent was exceptional as evidenced by her education, tutelage by prominent artists and instructors and her exhibitions, it would seem that she lived vicariously through her contemporaries, specifically with her friendships of Bernice Brown-Cronkhite (the first woman at Radcliffe College to earn a doctorate in political science, the youngest person to become a dean in the United States (Radcliffe College), and author), her sister Fredericka (active in Women’s Suffrage), and her brother Allen Winchester Jackson (of architectural acclaim). She traveled extensively with Ms. Brown and Louise’s sister and brother, taking in first-hand the art and architecture of Europe. While her friends and family married and were well recognized, she was very content living in her family's Studio House, which she shared with Ms. Brown and family relatives over different times of her life, and where she continued her art, painting portraits, mainly for family and friends. Oil on canvas, unsigned, and housed in a beautiful giltwood frame. This collection of paintings by Louise Jackson came directly from the family.
