About the Item

This painting is made by Pam Hawkes. On the painting you see the portrait of a woman This British artist is new to the Netherlands, her work is now a household name in the rest of the world. We're proud to represent her to the rest of the world! A painting by Pam Hawkes is something remarkable. At the same time it is a mix of modern and medieval. It is personal and yet it has a challenging epic quality. And although the subject may be sensual, the depicted models often radiate a cool detachment. This contradiction is what people like about the work of Pam Hawkes. And they really like it. Pam is one of the most popular artists of the moment 'on the continent'. We are happy that she has made a whole series of works for Galerie Bonnard. With this we can introduce her exceptional work in the Netherlands from the "Grenzeless" exhibition. The works contain glorious examples of Pam at her best. You see combinations that are reminiscent of Byzantine religious icons with centuries of painting. The golden sacred art of 1000 years ago was always an inspiration for Pam, which makes it unusual for contemporary painters. And she creates a magical effect with the elements of icons in her work. She explains: "The craftsmen who painted these statues were not allowed to deviate from the visual language prescribed by the church. And yet these icons seem to take on, regardless of the persona the spectator or worshiper needs. My work costs a lot of this. " Pam came to her unique style (called 'modern gothic' by a former teacher) for decades of hard work and study. She started as the classical art academy - with an emphasis on art from 11 years - before going to work in the famous jewelry district of Birmingham. But then life intervened and it was not until her thirties that Pam had the opportunity to revisit her talent. Shortly thereafter she had an MA from the University of Central England and she began giving lectures about drawing art and life at schools and universities in the region. She admits that she does not always practice what she learns. Pam knows the value of preparation, but often ignores it in her own approach to painting. "I oppose all that I have learned and learned," she says. "I rarely do research or preparatory drawings. I immediately go on with a half idea and work it out while I continue. " And it works! Pam's free-wheeling approach results in a number of spectacular original ideas. And they certainly do not look unformed or unfinished. Quite the opposite. Pam's paintings are always beautifully composed - even if they are strange in what they portray. The echo of those Byzantine icons is clearly visible here. The golden color scheme, the classic posed subject and the unusual frame. Weird and wonderful. On the left the example of the painting 'Spring', a wedding portrait with a special framework and a Halo of bees. And there are other examples of Pam's lively ideas in the exhibition. Pam Hawkes himself says: "The characters in my paintings do not easily give away their stories. It is a seductive world they refer to, a place of myth and mystery. They invite us on a certain level to speculate about the idealized memories of their lives and give a second thought to the half-forgotten fables that we all collect and carry through our own world. • Peonies in White Light - Oil Painting with 12K White Gold Leaf, Blond Female
    By Michael Van Zeyl
    Located in Chicago, IL
The blond figure, along with the floating peonies, combine to explore the dynamic between the eternal and the temporal, as well as our own relationship with nature. The gold leaf adds a three-dimensional softness as well as a glow upon which the female figure floats. Her skin is seductively painted; her teal dress falls off her shoulder; white peonies float by; the scene is set for a dreamy visual feast. The painting is framed in a gilt frame.
