Portrait of Senator Bartolomeo Panciatichi by Santi di Tito (1574)
Located in PARIS, FR
This recently rediscovered portrait of Santi di Tito depicts a Florentine senator, with a letter in his hand indicating that the painting was executed in 1574 when the sitter was 66 years old. On the basis of these clues, it is tempting to view it as a portrait of Bartolomeo Panciatichi, who was painted some thirty years before by Bronzino (1503 - 1572). While the treatment of the hands recalls the Florentine tradition of Mannerist portraits, the comparison with Bronzino's portrait illustrates Santi di Tito's search for greater realism, despite the stereotyped composition. 1. Santi di Tito, Counter-Reformation painter and portraitist Santi di Tito was the great painter of the Florentine Counter-Reformation. He proposed a new artistic language that broke away from Mannerism. Little is known about his training in Florence (perhaps alongside Bronzino or Baccio Bandinelli), but this period of training enabled him to join the Company of Saint Luke, the guild of Florentine painters, in 1554. Between 1560 and 1564, Santi di Tito spent time in Rome, where he frequented the workshop of Taddeo Zuccari. This stay had a fundamental influence on his work, thanks to the discovery of the late work of Raphael, but also his encounters with the painters Francesco Salviati and Federico Barocci. Around 1565, Santi di Tito returned to Florence, where he remained until the end of his life, dividing his talents between the creation of important religious paintings and countless portraits. He became one of the city's leading painters, distinguishing himself, in particular, in the creation of large religious compositions in which the spirit of the Counter-Reformation was reflected. In 1568, Santi di Tito became a member of the Confraternity of Saint Thomas Aquinas...

Self-Portrait - Royal Academy Founding Member, 18th Century
By Francis Hayman
Located in London, GB
Francis Hayman RA 1708–1776 Self-Portrait Oil on oak panel Image size: 8 x 6¼ inches Contemporary gilt frame This newly discovered work is the earliest known self portrait by Francis Hayman, dated to the mid to late 1720’s. The small scale of the portrait gives it a strong sense of intimacy. Whereas clients would often dress themselves in their best clothes for a sitting, Hayman has portrayed himself in informal attire, with his shirt unbuttoned and a wig cap. Born in 1708 to a respectable Devonshire family, his training began at the tender age of ten under the tutelage of the historical painter Robert Brown, who was probably an uncle. By the 1730’s he is known to have been engaged in painting scenery for the popular theatres on Goodman’s Fields and Drury Lane. He established a studio on St Martin’s Lane, and demonstrated his versatility as one of the most important painters of his time in portraits, illustration and history painting. Indeed, he was one of the first English painters deemed to have the skill and proficiency to rival that of the foreign masters, such as Holbein and Kneller, who were brought in by the court to make up for the perceived shortcomings of the native artists. Led by William Hogarth, Hayman and other artists began to create a new movement in the English art world. Thomas Gainsborough was one of his pupils, whom he is said to have introduced to the more lascivious and debauched underbelly of London life. After mostly making his living as an illustrator, in the 1740’s Hayman was commissioned by the proprietor of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, Jonathan Tyers, to produce a series of four large celebratory canvases depicting British victories from the Seven Years War. His association with Tyers continued, and over the next ten years he produced a number of large decorative paintings...

When viewed straight on, this "turning picture" by French artist Gaspar Antoine de Bois-Clair appears to be a disorganized collection of painted facial features and wooden slats. However, when viewed at an angle from either side, two separate images are revealed — portraits of Frederik IV and Louise of Mecklenburg-Güstrow, the King and Queen of Denmark. A wonder of both portraiture and trompe l'oeil, this work demonstrates the artist's skill in rendering intriguing visual effects. An impressive exercise in representing depth and 3-dimensionality in painting, the work is executed on a series of triangularly-cut strips of wood to create an effect now known as lenticular imaging...

Portrait of Heinrich von Werl and Saint John the Baptist, After Robert Campin
Located in Stockholm, SE
Here we see a reproduction of the renowned triptych altarpiece "The Werl Triptych" by Robert Campin, dating back to 1438, currently housed in the Prado Museum in Madrid. Unfortunately, the centerpiece of the triptych is missing. It portrays Heinrich von Werl, the donor, who is shown kneeling and praying alongside Saint John the Baptist. Von Werl was a member of the Minorite order, now known as the Franciscan order, based in Osnabrück. He relocated to Cologne in 1430 to pursue his studies at the university, where he earned a master's degree in 1435, after being previously designated as the provincial of the Cologne province. It is likely that von Werl commissioned the original triptych for the Minorite church in Cologne. The painting also reflects the concept of an intermediary saint, a notion influenced by Jan van Eyck...

Portrait of a Young Man, a newly discovered painting by Jean-Baptiste Wicar
By Jean-Baptiste Wicar
Located in PARIS, FR
Mrs. Maria Teresa Caracciolo, art historian and specialist of the painter, confirmed after an inspection of the painting that she was in favour of its attribution to Wicar. From a stylistic point of view, we find in this painting the precise and meticulous style of the artist, although no preparatory drawing is known to date. 1. Jean-Baptiste Wicar, disciple and friend of David Son of a carpenter in Lille, Jean-Baptiste Wicar was first a pupil at the free drawing school of his native town. At the age of 18 he was sent to the workshop of the engraver Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707 - 1783), and then admitted in 1781 to the workshop of the painter Jacques-Louis David (1748 - 1825). He accompanied his master to Rome and Florence in 1784-1785 and then stayed on his own in Italy from 1787 to 1793. Back in Paris in 1793, he was appointed curator of the section of antiques at the Museum thanks to David. In 1795, Wicar left France for Italy. In 1797, during Bonaparte’s Italian Campaign, he was a member of the Commission in charge of seizing artworks to enrich the French national museums. A member of the Saint-Luke Academy in Rome (from 1805), he was appointed director of the Royal Academy of Naples from 1806 to 1809, before settling permanently in Rome. In Italy Wicar achieved a real success, as the official portraitist of the Bonaparte family and as a history painter. The Resurrection of the Son of the Widow of Naïm (now in the Lille Museum of Fine Arts) is a perfect example of his large, impeccably executed compositions. Finally, Wicar was a remarkable collector: his drawings of the masters of the Italian Renaissance are now in the Museum of Fine Arts in Lille, following the bequest he made to the Society of Sciences, Agriculture and Arts of Lille. 2. Description of the work According to Maria Teresa Caracciolo : "one of the successes of Wicar's painted and drawn work is his portraits [...]. The artist gave 'the best of himself' in these artworks [...]; they are artworks of remarkable aesthetic quality, in which he shows himself to be both an excellent pupil of David and an autonomous artist in his own right". A young man is represented here in three-quarter view on a brown background from which he stands out. He is dressed with great elegance in a plum-coloured jacket with wide lapels. A white waistcoat...

Pair of early 17th century Jacobean Portraits of Jane and William de Malbone
By Circle of Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger
Located in Bath, Somerset
A pair of portraits of husband and wife Jane and William de Malbone. To be sold as a pair but priced individually. The first portrait features Jane de Malbone aged 38 and dated 1620 with the inscription upper left 'Aetatis sue 38 : AN 1620'. She wears a black gown and hat with white lace ruff and cuffs and sleeves lined with red silk. Her clothes are adorned with expensive jewels, gold chains and coral beads, demonstrating her wealth and high status. A gold locket, possibly containing a portrait miniature of a loved one or a timepiece hangs from a chain at her waist and as well as wearing a ring with a precious stone on one finger, she wears a second ring attached to the lace of her cuff. She holds a finely worked gold handle of a fan in one hand and there is a gold key attached to her skirt, suggesting either more riches locked away or perhaps referring to a position of responsibility she holds. Dimensions: height 103 x width 81cm (in frame) The portrait of the gentleman is of her husband, William de Malbone aged 44 and dated 1621 with the inscription upper left 'Aetatis sua 44 : An Domini 1621' and family crest upper left. He is richly dressed wearing a black silk damask tunic with a fine white lace ruff and cuffs. He holds a scroll in one hand and his ruff band strings in the other, with a gold ring worn on his little finger. Oil on oak panel, in an ebonised wooden frame, with oak cradling to the reverse of the panel. Dimensions: height 87.5 x width 71.5cm (in frame) Provenance: The Right Hon. The Lord Stanley of Alderley Christies, London, 'Old Pictures', December 9, 1938, lot 28 and 29. Sold to Smedley-Aston Christies, London February 16, 1945, lot 129 Private collection, Isle of Wight The Malbones (or Malbons) were descended from the barons of Wich Malbank or Nantwich as it is known today in Cheshire, the first of whom came over from France in 1080AD. The barons were the owners of large swathes of land according to the Domesday Book. Following the end of the Barony, a line of Malbons are documented as living at Bradeley Hall, Haslington until 1726 and were there during the Civil War in 1642 when a Thomas Malbon recorded the events from the viewpoint of a Parliamentarian. According to the date and age inscribed on this portrait, the male sitter is probably a William Malbone (1584-1648), son of George Malbone and Matilda Leversage and brother of Thomas Malbone (1578-1658), a lawyer. The scroll in his hand indicates that he was probably a man of letters, perhaps a lawyer or politician. After several generations the Malbones clearly decided it was wise to leave national politics behind and to focus on managing their own land and business affairs. Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger was a Flemish artist working at the Tudor Court. He was born in Bruges and was brought to England as a child by his father, Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder, who was also a painter. He became a fashionable portraitist in the last decade of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I under the patronage of her champion and pageant-master Sir Henry Lee of Ditchley and painted the portrait of Elizabeth known as the 'Ditchley Portrait' in 1592 as well as the full-length of the Queen's favourite, the Earl of Essex...
