About the Item
In historical British portraiture, it's the sitter that drives price. In the present work, the sitter is Mary Charlotte Anne Wellesley-Pole, eldest daughter of William, 4th Earl of Mornington, and niece of the Duke of Wellington and two-time Prime Minister of England. This is one of Hoppner's best works. It's on a par with Ladies Sarah and Lady Catherine Bligh in the Frick Collection and the Frankland Sisters in the National Gallery in Washington. The sitter is a beautiful young woman painted in an exquisitely refined and sophisticated style. In British portraiture, it's the sitter who mostly determines the desirability and value of the art. Lady Bagot showcases the quintessence of aristocratic elegance. The frame is a rare, and mostly hand-carved, period British Rococo frame with a plaque. You can find a Hoppner hanging in the Frick Collection next to Sir Joshua Reynolds and John Constable and steps away from Rembrandt and Vermeer.
Hoppner's background treatment prefigures by forty years the quick and loose gestural brushstrokes of Impressionism.
The painting was sold in 1924 to John Ford of Detroit for a sum of $30,000.
