Rafael Coronel
Rafael Coronel, "Untitled, " Mixed Media on Painter's Board, Signed by Artist

early 1970s

About the Item

'Untitled' by Rafael Coronel, is a fabulous and stylistically distinct example of Coronel's work from the 1960s and 1970s in which his subjects are located at the surface of blank, colored backgrounds. Dating from 1970 -1973, the painting is signed 'RAFAEL CORONEL' lower left. Measuring 30 inches H. x 20 inches W. The framed dimensions are 35 inches H. x 25 inches W. Coronel's work from this period focuses on the tension between the human figure and the space surrounding her. His representational paintings have a melancholic sobriety, and include faces from the past great masters, often floating in a diffuse haze. Rafael Coronel is one Mexico's leading figurative artists of the 20th-21st centuries, finding inspiration in the work of the El Greco (1541-1614), the Baroque Era, as well as the works of Francisco Goya (1746-1828) and Francis Bacon (1909-1992). While the artist's work has been experimental in its subject matter, it has been largely figurative. The work is consistent with other pieces by the artist from the 1970s: depicting his subjects against a simplified background, recalling Spanish master works by Goya, Ribera, and Zurburan.

  • Victor Salmones Signed Bronze Bust of a Young Child
    By Victor Salmones
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
An untitled signed bronze sculpture by the Mexican artist, Victor Salmones (1937 - 1989) from an edition of 10. Numbered 1 of 10. Signature "Victor Salmones. 1/10" in cast. In excellent original condition. Victor Salmones (1937-1989) was the most widely known sculptor living and working in Mexico during his lifetime. His sculptures won him universal acclaim and are held in the collections of museums, corporations, cities, universities and private collectors in some 30 countries. During his career, he was highly sought after and increasingly involved in the execution of commissions for major public works around the world. Salmones developed his love and talent for creating sculpture by working with clay in high school. He attended the Instituto de Bellas Artes (Mexican National Institute of Fine Arts), where he was an apprentice to the Bauhaus master, Otto Hoffman. He was trained to use the exacting, age-old lost wax method of casting and worked principally in bronze. Hoffman's encouragement led to the opening of Victor's own sculpture workshop in Cuernavaca in 1966. In 1967, Salmones’ fluid bronze “Adam” won first prize at the Biennale Exposition of the National Museum of Modern Art. His work continued to win the highest critical acclaim at subsequent Biennale expositions, and in 1971, over hundreds of entries, his life-size bronze Narcissus...
