This is a small format painted in oil on a wooden support. A father and his child are at the beach, it's summer but the waves look unpleasant: the white "teeth" pointing in the background testify to this. However, the yellow touch (bathing suit and hair) indicates that the child is not afraid. All in cold angles and colours, the father who no longer knows where to give eyes (you can see three on his face!) so many dangers can arise!
Il s'agit ici d'un petit format peint à l'huile sur un support bois. Un père et son enfant sont à la plage, c'est l'été mais les vagues ont l'air peu sympathiques : en témoignent les "dents" blanches pointant en arrière-plan. La touche de jaune (maillot de bain et cheveux) indique cependant que l'enfant n'a pas peur. Tout en angles et en couleurs froides, le papa qui ne sait plus où donner des yeux (on peut en voir trois sur son visage !) tant les dangers peuvent survenir !
Raymond Debiève (1931-2011) - Painter, ceramist and sculptor
Raymond Debiève was born on 29 May 1931, just like his twin brother Michel, in a popular suburb of Maubeuge (Northern France). Very early, encouraged by their father Emile, the two brothers play with pencils, learn the features on paper or kitchen tiles. The war disrupts the family's life : Emile dies and the twins are separated. In 1944, Madeleine, the mother, remarried Lucien Henneuse, who offered them their first paint box, their easels and pallets. Later came studies at the Beaux-Arts de Valenciennes, on the recommendations of the painter Charles Bétrémieux, where their works were very quickly noticed and rewarded : Raymond and Michel obtained prizes each year. At home, Lucien transforms a room into a workshop for the two brothers, installs a forge in the garage : Raymond and Michel sculpt the metal, enamel it, create jewellery, learn clay modelling. In 1953, the two young artists entered the studio of the glass painter Paul Ducatez, and were in close contact with the Abbot Mériaux, a visionary priest attentive to the Popular Arts and Traditions movement and founder of the Glass Museum of Sars-Poteries. For two years, they mainly made stained glass windows for the churches in the area. The 60's saw the dissociation of the twins, each one will then carry out his work alone : Michel in Nantes, Raymond in Provence.
Raymond Debiève exhibited during his lifetime in France in Paris (Galerie Mai, Galerie du Siècle, Galerie de la Demeure where he met Jean Lurçat), Lille (Galerie des Flandres), Provence in Avignon (Galerie Odile Guérin), Dieulefit, Valréas and Taulignan as well as in Switzerland (Galerie de la Ratière, Lac Léman). During his lifetime he met renowned artists such as César, Jean Lurçat, Edouard Pignon ; the famous art critic Jean Bouret, or the writers Henri Bosco and Hélène Parmelier. In 1983, he set up his last workshop in Provence, in Rochegude. In 2007, Alain Bouret published the polychrome Portraits d'artistes peintres, at Ides et Calendes (Neufchâtel). After his death in 2011, a retrospective is organized in his native region in 2017.
Coming from a period that saw the emergence of many artistic trends (art deco, cubism, abstraction), fascinated by Picasso's protean work, but also nourished by Van Gogh, Velasquez, Flemish painters: he made his own these emblematic themes that are maternity, the painter's workshops, or still lifes.
His works, which are very varied in form, medium and subject, have in common that they capture life and the daily life that surrounds the artist in a few strokes and colours: portraits, interior scenes and landscapes bear witness to an acute, sometimes amused, sometimes revolted, view of the reconstructive world that is this post-war period in France.
Raymond Debiève, wishing fiercely to remain free, not giving in anything to fashions or tendencies, had chosen to live apart since his departure in Provence, with his wife Jeannette, his unfailing support. Since his death, his work has been the subject of a rediscovery and has aroused growing interest, both in France and internationally.
