About the Item
Sandra Cohen’s “hindbrain” is a 16 x 16 x 1 inch acrylic painting on cradled wood, in pink, red, yellow and green, with overlaid patterns in white and silver. A hand plays guitar strings that extend from a verdant, wavering rack of antlers. An outer vignette of color and pattern suggests an inaccessible center and paused or mirrored time and space. Inspired by her experience as a musician, “hindbrain” glimpses through a doorway to a creative beta-state. This painting is unframed, signed on the back with white painted sides.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids. Cohen is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
