Late 19th Century antique Orientalist oil painting of a young woman

c. 1880

About the Item

Late 19th Century antique Orientalist oil painting of a young woman Frame: height 146cm, width 86cm, depth 7cm Canvas: height 132cm, width 73cm, depth 3cm This large oil on canvas portrait depicts a classic Orientalist subject: a young woman in traditional North African dress, designed to appeal to the late 19th Century sense of the exotic. The woman in the painting is shown looking into the distance, against a wall, and with flowers below her left hand. The painting is set within a giltwood frame and is signed indistinctly to the centre left. The painting has a remarkable quality to it: neither impressionistic, nor fully naturalistic, but a mix of both, such that it has an excellent individual character and warmth to it, perfectly suited to render the graceful subject.
