Alfred Frederick William Hayward
Convolvulus

1933

About the Item

Alfred Frederick William Hayward, R.O.I. (1856-1939) Convolvulus signed ‘AFW Hayward’ (lower right) oil on canvas 17 x 13 in. (43.2 x 33.1 cm.) frame 21 ¼ x 17 ⅜ in. (53.9 x 44.1 cm.) Presented in an 18th Century hand-carved oak frame, possibly French. Exhibited: Possibly London, Royal Academy, 1933, no. 515. Provenance: with The Fine Art Society, Ltd, London. Composed with thought and precision, Convolvus possesses a serenity and subtle magnetism worthy of the French master Henry Fantin-Latour. Indeed, it is likely that such comparisons created a market for Alfred Hayward in France, for he exhibited a number of times at the Paris Salon. Born in Ontario, Hayward left Canada to train in Europe as an artist, studying at the Royal Academy Schools, where he exhibited 34 times - all but twice depicting plants or flowers. Settling in England, Hayward also sporadically exhibited in North America, at the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the Canadian National Exhibition, and with the National Academy of Design, New York.
