"White Statuette", 1933 Oil Still Life

"Sliced Bread" is an oil painting, and mixed media collage on canvas. It is a still life on a table top of a piece of bread with a knife in it sitting on a napkin, an old metal pitcher with a spoon resting on it and a spoon on the table between the pitcher and the bread. Behind these objects in the foreground is a mysterious object. It is complied of many colorful rectangles, and the top of it is a dark neutral grey. It could be a piece of cake that has just been cut, bursting with flavor, or it could be a tiled or woven box with a peaked lid, possibly a bread box? Behind the table against an off white wall are 20 rectangles. Some of these are solid blocks of color, others are drawings on paper of landscapes and people that bring to mind postcards pinned up on a wall. Overlapping some the these is a larger charcoal drawing...

Costa Rica! Still Life with Guitar, Fruit, Wine, and Newsprint in Oil on Canvas Still life in a semi-cubist style by Irene Pattinson (American, 1909-1999). On a reddish-purple table, there is a plate with two apples, a bottle of wine, and an acoustic guitar. The guitar's headstock is shown extending from where the neck meets the body, implying a cubist interpretation of the scene. At the back of the still life arrangement, there is a (collage) newspaper with "Costa Rica!" in the headline. At the left of the composition, there is a curtain or cloth draped across part of the scene. Signed "Irene Pattinson" on verso. No frame. Canvas size: 32"H x 24"W Irene Pattinson (American, 1909-1999) studied at the California School of Fine Art (now The San Francisco Art Institute), San Francisco State College and The Marion Hartwell School of Design. She was President of the San Francisco Woman Artists Association 1955-56. effrey Long, the elder son of a commercial graphic artist at Time & Life, was born in New York City in 1948. In 1970 Long received a BFA in Illustration and Art Education from Rhode Island School of Design and had decided to be a painter. His paintings from this period were photo realistic portraits and figures set in landscapes. On graduation, he married and began teaching art in a Rhode Island public school system. From 1971 through 1973 he was a resident artist at the Rockefeller-funded Pulpit Rock Community in Woodstock, Connecticut. Works from this intensive period were representational, highly dynamic, and borrowed from the vocabulary of cartoons. In early 1974 Long moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he obtained a full scholarship at California College of Arts & Crafts (now California College of Arts). There he received an MFA in painting in 1976. He established various studios in Oakland and Emeryville, while also working as a Curatorial Assistant at The Oakland Museum. The museum brought him in touch with such California artists as Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, Manuel Neri, Joan Brown, Jay de Feo...
