Darius Yektai
Untitled - Lily Diptych

2022

About the Item

An abstract painting of a single lily. The lily sits on the righthand side of the composition against a textured black background. The sage green, grey field on the left of the composition could be a window, with a cool winter like brightness implied by the yellow in the top left corner, showing through the black background and brighter against the cool green rectangle. The painting is actually two canvases held together in one frame, and the texture of the bisecting center line adds a sense tension to the piece, the top canvas much heavier compositionally than the bottom piece, however the strong black u shape on the lower canvas grounds the piece, creating balance. The lily itself is a three dimensional piece, thick swaths of paint raised off the canvas in lovely luscious brushstrokes. White and magenta paint mix naturally as the paint is dragged across the canvas. There is a simplicity about this piece that is so delicate for its size, but the texture and depth make it a piece that compels you to keep looking, there is more to be found in it upon every viewing. Framed dimensions 78.5 in x 53 in Unframed dimensions 76 in x 51 in Framed in a natural wooden untreated custom floating frame, cleat style hanging attachment on back. Darius Yektai was born in Southampton NY, in 1973. He lives and works out of his home and studio in Sag Harbor. He grew up in a cultural home of art and artists, with his Greek-American Mother, and his Father, Manoucher Yektai, an Iranian who emigrated to the US after the Second World War, was a prominent Hamptons AbEx painter. Darius has picked up some traits from his father but pushes even further into what is now completely his-own. Darius' most recent body of work is bright, colorful, with oil and acrylic paints laid on thick. He's creating sculptural paintings that can't be read from left to right, they need to be examined from surface to base, from section to section, and then overall as an encompassing whole.
