At 18 Ricks took a liking to painting as began studying the work of his father and Sergei Bongart. He briefly studied in college but found that it was not helpful to his natural abilities, eventually after a mission to New York, and studying the masters in museums, he return to the Tetons with new techniques and a style all his own. Today, his works of the Tetons and other places where the viewer can find their own serenity are on display in many renowned collections where they are enjoyed by critics and collectors alike.
