About

This modernist floral still life painting has a distinguished lineage. It was originally owned by Mrs. E. Douglas Graydon, an important patron of the artist, and was formerly in the collection of the Norton Museum of Art. Manigault's work of the early 1920s anticipates the work of Preston Dickinson and other modernists of a decade later. Middleton Manigault was born and raised in Canada in 1887, but was also associated with Charleston, South Carolina where his great-grandfather Joseph Manigault lived, building the Joseph Manigault House, which is still used by the Charleston Museum. Manigault moved to New York at 18 years of age and, encouraged by his parents in his art pursuits, studied with Robert Henri and Kenneth Hayes Miller, who became his friend, at the New York School of Art. Manigault began exhibiting his paintings in 1906, at the age of nineteen. In 1912, he was influenced by the Old Masters during a European trip. He would eventually work in several styles and media, his oil paintings varying from early stylized, decorative, pointillist-expressionist landscapes, buildings and still-lifes, to later, more broadly painted works related to Cezanne's applications of patches of color. Manigault exhibited two paintings in the 1913 New York Armory Show, one of which was purchased from the exhibition by Arthur Jerome Eddy and J. Paul Getty, major avant-garde art collectors. Manigault’s work is found in public institutions across the United States including the Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio, which, in 1931, was the first public institution to acquire a work by Manigault, The Procession, 1911. In 2002, the museum provided the venue for the artist’s first one-man exhibition eighty-six years. Later, the museum acquired another Manigault, The Clown, 1912. The artist’s work can also be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California; Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida; Westmoreland Museum of American Art, Greensburg, Pennsylvania; Arnot Art Museum, Elmira, New York; the Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, South Carolina; the Heckscher Museum of Art, Huntington, New York; and the Museum London, London, Ontario.
