Elizabeth Rickert
American Realist still life of Pink and Yellow Roses

circa 2010

About the Item

American Painter of flowers and garden scenes. Many of her works are in public collections. “It’s interesting where you go in a 45-year art career. I look back now and see that I have learned many different technical skills in oil painting, but what is most important is that I have learned the subtlety of catching a moment in time and portraying the beautiful complexity of that moment in nature, bringing a richness to it that is beyond our conscious, objective ability to describe… beyond our expectations. There is an art to choosing the scene or idea that is compelling enough to make the viewer pause and drink it in, not pass over it as something easily categorized. To see the reflections, the depth of images, the colors that are just a bit beyond everyday reality, and the selection of that scene which calls attention to the visual perfection found everywhere in nature. It is the still moment that hints at the wealth to be found in the backgrounds of our lives. This is my common thread, not a particular palette, the field of view, or subject matter. Take this moment of beauty and freeze it into an object that puts the viewer on notice: Be attentive.” This piece is signed on the reverse and is framed in its original frame.

  • 19th century English oil of still life of fruit, German Stein with silver lid
    By CHARLES THOMAS BALE
    Located in Woodbury, CT
Outstanding English 19th century still life of fruit, a German Stein with silver top in an interior. Charles Thomas Bale was born in Soho, London in 1849, the son of Thomas Bale, a basket maker. His older brother Thomas Charles Bale (1831-1899) was an artist and picture restorer. He lived with his family in St James, Westminster and although little is known about his education, he would have undoubtedly received encouragement and drawing tuition from his brother. Bale started exhibiting in 1866 at the Institute of British Artists, Suffolk Street. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872, the same year he married Caroline Leathem. Together, they spent their married life in St Pancras. He specialized in still life paintings predominantly of fruit, but he frequently incorporated baskets, a homage to his family’s profession, as well as pottery, glass, and game. Bale’s work was influenced by the English still-life artists George Lance and William Duffield...

  • Red Ice Block Tongs
    By John Morfis
    Located in Sag Harbor, NY
An oil painting of an antique pair of tongs, meant for use during ice fishing. Suspended from a small rope, hanging from a single nail, against a grey backdrop. Brushstrokes can be seen in the gray of the background, but are harder to make out on the subject. Morfis paints in an extremely refined, realist approach. Painting dimensions: 25 x 19 inches Framed dimensions: 30 x 24 x 1.5 inches Available at Grenning Gallery. BIOGRAPHY John Morfis was born in Glen Cove, Long Island in 1976. His humble beginnings made pursuing a career in art difficult and paradoxically necessary. Fixated on making things aesthetically pleasing, John made an extreme departure from his family life when he chose to base his life on art. Surrounded by mechanics, welders, and otherwise trade workers John had a tough time expressing his interest in a world much more utilitarian and much less expressive and impractical. With an extraordinary desire to be an artist and a grant awarded, John was able to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting from the University of Hartford in 1998. While there John studied oil painting under American realist Stephen Brown. John’s first solo show took place in 2007 at the Ellen Traut Collection Gallery in Hartford, CT and was a near sell out. Since then John has had success up and down the northeastern coast of the United States working with various galleries and collectors. His work has also appeared in various group shows at the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut. ARTIST STATEMENT Each painting, although a portrait of a tired hand...
