About the Item
A single neon-red bloom pops from the background in this lively still life by Jernnifer Hornyak. Known for her non-traditional florals and her inspired palette— Hornyak’s flowers sit in a dark red vase against a bright turquoise cloth and gray-green backdrop. The rich palette—reds, greens, blues, and purple speaks to classical influences but the abstracted form and lavish brush strokes are intended to suggest the flower as a metaphor.

She studied at the Grimsby School of Art in England. In 1961, she moved to Montreal where she attended McGill University, the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal and the Centre Saidye Bronfman. Hornyak has exhibited throughout North America and Europe including the Paris World Exhibition in 1987 where her work was shown alongside that of Modigliani, Picasso and van Dongen. Hornyak’s work is represented in many private and corporate collections.
