Blue & Green Mid-Century Floral
By Daniel (Danny) Garcia
Located in Soquel, CA
American Impressionist, mid-century floral still life by listed artist Daniel (Danny) Garcia (American, 1929-2012). Signed "Garcia" lower right. Signed and dated on verso, "1968" and "D. Garcia." Biography statement applied on verso. Presented in a rustic wood frame. Image, 24"H x 18"W.
Daniel (Danny) Garcia was born in Monterey, California on April 23, 1929. He died in 2012 at the age of 83.
The town’s colorful waterfront, with the clanking machinery and squawking sea gulls of the sardine canneries, made a vivid impression on the young Garcia. When he was thirteen, he enrolled in a summer art course and received his first instruction in oil painting.
Following Far Eastern service on active duty aboard a destroyer in the U.S.N.R. during the Korean War, Garcia studied art and architecture at Monterey Peninsula College, graduating in 1954.
Over the years, the artist’s style ranged from realism to abstraction, although he is known primarily as an impressionist. Probably one of the most intriguing characteristics of Garcia’s work is his “vertical color-flow,” inspired by the myriad forms of lights and movement under the sea, which he observed during years of skin diving.
Mr. Garcia started his Garcia Gallery with his wife Carmen in the 1950s as a one-room operation in Carmel and later expanded to include two full gallery locations in Carmel.
In 1965, Garcia was commissioned by Father Edward Varni to paint the fourteen “Stations of the Cross” for the Chapel of the Most Precious Blood, in Concord, California. And in 1966, the artist was given another religious commission, by Father Jeremian O’Sullivan who asked Garcia to paint “The Crucifixion” for St. Jude’s Church in Marina, California.
Notable collectors who have owned his work include Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon; Mr. Frank Sinatra, Mr. & Mrs. Steve Allen, Greer Garson, Trini Lopez, Mr. & Mrs. Dean Martin, Mrs. Lauritz Melchior, and Mr. & Mrs. George Shearing. His impressionist paintings have been acquired by collectors worldwide. Paintings by Garcia...
