Gabriel Deschamps
"Le Bouquet Blanc" / The White Bouquet

1974

About the Item

Gabriel Deschamps (1919 - , France) "Le Bouquet Blanc" / The White Bouquet. Oil on Canvas, framed, under glass. The frame is 48 5/8” x 34 3/4," the canvas is 39 1/2" high by 26" wide. This is a big, heavy, impressive painting of a bouquet of abstract white flowers and is large enough to take command of a stair well or other large open vertical space. The work has a cleaning notice on the back in french which reads: "“To not alter the colors, ensure a good preservation and avoid any brilliances this painting has never been varnished. For an eventual cleaning, proceed with a gentle brush, avoid all solvents: gasoline, water, alcohol, etc.” It also has a shipping sticker from Japan and was purchased from an estate in Texas - it has been well traveled. Considering this it is in good condition but does have some minor issues: the pictures will show some cracking in the paint alone the upper edge and pop in the paint of approximately 1/4-inch in the lower left. Neither of these are visible save at close inspection. The piece is signed and dated at the lower right. Gabriel Deschamps was born in 1919 and studied at the École Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. From 1939 he was a State Art Professor and a member of the Paris Autumn Salon. He was best known for his evocative landscapes depicting Provence, where he had a house and the spectacular coastline of the South of France. His paintings perfectly capture the fresh, vibrant colours and the intense quality of light in that region. Deschamps’ paintings were sold to many collectors in the United Kingdom in his lifetime and his works are represented in important private collections in Switzerland, Belgium, Brazil, USA and Argentina. He has been exhibited: Paris, Algiers, Oran and Casablanca

He belongs to the School of Paris. In 1943, Jacques de Laprade dedicated a book to Roger Limouse in the collection "The Masters of Tomorrow" directed by Francis Carco. He writes, "One of the characteristics of this personality is strength. There is nothing in Limouse that lacks relief. This small and extremely vigorous man seduces by his direct and dru language, by his deep conviction, by the picturesque of his stories, by his very life which testifies to his energy. In 1948, Roger Limouse was appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (Professor at the School of Fine Arts). He held this position until 1964. In 1949, the journalist Gisèle d'Assailly (1904-1969) devoted a book "With the Painters of Poetic Reality" to eight friendly painters, supporters of a colorful and intimate figurative painting of French inspiration, Maurice Brianchon, Christian Caillard...
