Trying to Remember the Byzantine: Realistic Oil Painting of Neo-Classical Column

2013

About

Realistic architectural still life painting, oil on canvas vertical oil painting, 70 x 20 x 1.5 inches Mr. Britell's subject matter is drawn from the world of pre-modernist architecture. His focus is on quintessential neo-classical architecture, brick facades, stonework structures and the elegant decorative embellishments that were once a standard feature of the Gothic revival, Neo-classical and other historic styles of American urban architecture. These he depicts with a great deal of photo realist detail. Trying to Remember the Byzantine is a wonderful example of Mr. Britell's meticulous brushwork as he merges motifs from both the Roman and Greek fallen empires. About the artist: Richard Britell, a career painter, studied at Pratt Institute with Philip Pearlstein and Walter Erlebacher. His first show in NYC at Staempfli Gallery was sold out, and reviewed in the New York Times. Britell’s new works revolve around large, dreamy cityscapes tending toward abstraction.
