"Sinking Ship", Oil Painting

2022

About the Item

Scott Fraser's "Sinking Ship" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts gold fish snacks flowing from a model sail boat into a bag with a woman's portrait. About the artist: Scott Fraser is a leading figure in twenty-first century realist painting, specializing in taking ordinary objects and composing them in extraordinary ways. Many adjectives have been used to describe his work: quirky, intense, humorous, thoughtful; but above all, there is a sense of the personal in his unique compositions. Fraser taps into a variety of influences, including art history, former teachers, friends and family. His work can be found in over 25 museum collections around the country including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Fine Arts Museums in San Francisco, and the Whitney Western Art Museum in the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Cody WY.

However, the longer we look at one of his paintings, the more we become aware that they are anything but a part of our world. We encounter Sprick's paintings not so much as statements, but more as experiences, whereby we engage deeply with his creativity. - Timothy J. Standring, exhibition curator and Gates Foundation Curator at the Denver Art Museum. Daniel Sprick's Fictions: Recent Works includes more than 30 examples of the Colorado artist's portraiture and still life paintings that blur the line between realism and abstraction.
