Romantic Still-life Paintings

ROMANTIC STYLE

In emphasizing emotion and imagination, romantic art shifted away from the restraint of classicism and neoclassicism that had dominated art in Europe since the Renaissance. Romanticism achieved its greatest popularity in art, literature, music and philosophy between 1780 and 1830, although its expression of individual experiences ranging from awe to passion informed culture in the decades after.

Landscape painting was especially popular during the romantic period, as were nature studies of wild animals and fantasies of exotic lands. Romanticism varied across Europe as it reacted to the rise of industrialization, a more personal relationship with faith that was distanced from the church and the rationalist thinking of the Enlightenment.

British painters such as John Constable and J.M.W. Turner responded dramatically to the light and atmosphere of the natural world, while William Blake conveyed humanity’s connection to the divine in his visionary art. In Germany, the late-18th-century Sturm und Drang, or Storm and Drive, movement, with its probing of the unconscious, inspired a sense of mystery in work by romantic artists such as Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge. In France, where the French Revolution had turned tradition upside down, Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix used lush brushwork to paint monumental canvases with tumultuous scenes of nature and history.

The romantic movement and its subject matter were a significant influence on the Pre-Raphaelites, Symbolists and the American painters of the Hudson River School, as well as on other cultural movements in the 19th and 20th centuries that saw artists build on this perspective in which art was guided by emotion rather than reason.

Large Early 20th Century Oil on Canvas of Tulips Displayed in a Confit Jar.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Large early 20th century French oil on canvas of tulips displayed in a confit jar. Signed Jean Julien to the bottom left and presented in a period frame. A rather charming and romantic impression of a tulip display. The colour palette is soft and gentle, light and airy and the artist has managed to impart to the whole painting a chalky texture which gives the impression of soft focus. The tulips are delicately painted but with great precision and attention to detail. The artist has thought carefully about both the scale and the shape of the image. The elongated rectangle is a perfect fit for the long ranging tulip stems. A thoroughly charming painting. Jean Pierre Louis Joseph Julien was a French painter born in Marseille on the 12th of May 1888. Julien was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, friend of Marcel Pagnol, Fernandel, Raimu and Tino Rossi. Guy Dornand called him “the ambassador of Provence in Paris”. Between the wars, he stayed in Italy, travelled to North Africa and designed posters for tourism, murals and theatre sets, while remaining faithful to his hometown. He was a member of the 'Association des Marseillais de Paris.' along with his colleague Auguste Durand-Rosé. In 1933 Emmanuel Pontremoli, director of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts proposed a design project for a school in Rue Saint-Martin, Paris. Several artists were given the chance to compete for this opportunity. Jean Julien impressed and was given the task. Julien taught at the School of Fine Arts in Paris and was also a drawing teacher at the Polytechnic School. Jean Julien died in Sanary-sur-Mer on the 5th of September 1974.

Lizbeth Mitty, Melting Light, 2019, oil on canvas, 12 x 12, Still Life
Located in Darien, CT
Born in Queens, NY to a family of artists, inventors and actors, Lizbeth Mitty grew up painting and writing. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in both the United States and abroad and is held in public and private collections including the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The New York State Museum, The Orlando Museum of Art, The Zimmerli Archive, The U.S. State Department, and Trierenberg Holding AG (Austria). My studio is located in Brooklyn, NY. Described by New York Times critic Ken Johnson as a combination of “painterly verve and hellish beauty” — Mitty's work has long been concerned with examining and amplifying the intrinsic abstract beauty of deteriorating or overlooked corners of urban architecture and interiors. In 2015, one object, the chandelier, rose up from detritus to dominate her body of work. Spectacular, illuminated and intricate, the chandelier is evocative of grandeur. In contrast, for much of Mitty's career, scrap yards and other sites of urban devastation, locations of organized chaos, formally beautiful, yet apocalyptic and terrifying. Similarly, the chandeliers speak of decadence, sadness, elegance, death and hope. By 2017, the chandeliers began to open and morph into architecture in the round. Gazebos and scrap dominate a verdant post-apocalyptic landscape...

French Still Life, Allegorical Hommage to the Trinity and the Virgin Mary
Located in Cotignac, FR
Late 19th Century allegorical oil on board still life interior scene, signed bottom right, P Gonnard (see photo). Presented in fine 'Montparnasse' frame. A very charming rendition of a collection of objects on a table. The artist has captured all the reflections in the silver and copper surfaces of the objects as well as giving a wonderful sense of depth and presence to all the other objects, porcelain, faience, wood and fruit. Though in itself a beautiful painting as with so many art works there is a 'back story'. The collection of objects appears to be an allegory and is in hommage to the central wood sculpture depicted of the Virgin Mary. This was a popular conceit in paintings from the baroque and renaissance periods. An example is: Still Life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose which is an oil-on-canvas painting by Baroque Spanish artist Francisco de Zurbarán completed in 1633 Many of Zurbaran's works contained Christian themes, and the objects in the painting are often interpreted as having symbolic meaning as alluding to the Holy Trinity or as an hommage to the Virgin Mary. It has been written that the objects in these works are symbolic offerings to the Virgin Mary. Her love, purity and chastity are signified by the rose and the cup of water. The lemons are an Easter fruit that, along with the oranges with blossoms...
