This original oil painting by Sylvia Paul presents a richly textured garden study featuring the verdant subject matter of wild flora. The artist conveys the blisfull vitality of the natural world through layers of richly thick paint work combined with vividly expressive gestures that creates a joyful energy. Sylvia Paul studied painting at Colchester School of Art and Hockerill College of Education. She exhibits widely across the UK including galleries in London, Surrey, Neath, Wales and Bristol. Residing in East Anglia for most of her life she has been a regular exhibitor for nearly forty years in the region. One of her Japanese abstracts was hung in The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2009. She has held three solo exhibitions in Japan and in 2013 at her exhibition at Gallery Sakura, Nagoaka, 36 paintings were sold in three days. Other successes include being accepted for open exhibitions with The Pastel Society. The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, The Laing Landscape Exhibition and The Royal Institute of Water Colour Artists where two of her landscape collages were exhibited. Two of Sylvia’s paintings are in the Norwich Union Art Collection and her work is in many private collections in the UK and abroad. Sylvia continues to demonstrate to art clubs and is has inspired many people with her painting workshops. Since 2013 Sylvia has also been creating textile art and was elected as a member of Art Textiles: Made in Britain in 2016. She exhibits with them every other year at The Festival of Quilts at the NEC and then on tour throughout the UK. Mary Chaplin is a professional French artist living in Wailly, near Amiens in the beautiful River Selle Valley. She was born near the Bay of the Somme and spent her younger years in the Picardie countryside, often accompanying her father who was passionate about the local wildlife and environment. Her mother had a beautiful garden where she grew flowers to sell at the weekly village markets , Mary would help her picking and creating bunches of flowers, old roses, peonies, lupines , phlox…, it was surely from these early years that her love of the country , forests and flowers came from. Her earliest works then were motivated by her environment, the sea, fields, forests, country life, not forgetting the flowers in her mother’s garden. The Bay of the River Somme is famous for its flora, fauna and above all its beautiful light which has always been an inspiration for painters, poets and writers. At first she experimented with many different techniques, water colour, pastels, pencil, acrylic and oil, capturing the scenes around her, but even at the beginning of her career she was using light as an integral theme through her works. In 2005 her work took on a great U turn when sitting quietly in a small chapel in a picturesque coastal village , Bois de Cise, she watched the light patterns through the stained glass windows moving slowly over the old flag...
