Tony Ng
"Exploration of Love #2", Batik sarong in folding heart-shaped, Nyonya Baba

2018

About the Item

"Exploration of Love" reveals the artist’s concept of bittersweet life. Happiness and depression leave marks in our life, just like those creases in batiks. All creases are gathered together and turn out a love shape. The artist believes one’s life is completed because of bitter and sweet experiences. Tony Ng collects many Batik for his own interest. He chooses batiks to be his painting subject, not only because of their vibrant colours and patterns, batik is also a symbol to present civic culture of Malaysia. Tony Ng attempts to remind people to look back traditional items that may have forgotten at somewhere else, just like traditional convention has been gradually vanishing in the history. Every Batik is unique. Every piece presents beauty of own culture.

Peranakan is not just one symbol of diverse cultures in Malaysia, but is more about an emotional connection between grandmother and him. This is a painting of a Kamcheng sitting on a batik. The edges of the painting has gold plates finishing. Kamcheng refers to the elaborately-decorated, traditional Peranakan storage vase and also means friendship, the theme for this year's Peranakan Festival. The Peranakans or Peranakan Chinese are a sub-ethnic group defined by their genealogical descent from the first waves of Chinese settlers in the Malay Peninsula and Indonesian Archipelago. In Malaysia, the Peranakan Chinese commonly refer to themselves as Baba-Nonya. The term Baba 峇峇 is an honorific for Straits Chinese...
