About the Item

Signed Upper Left "Tosca" for Tosca Olinski (American, 1909-1984) and painted in 1941. Provenance: Mongerson Wunderlich Galleries, Chicago. Exhibited: New Directions in American Painting, Carnegie Institute, 1941 Daughter of the artist, Ivan Olinsky, Tosca was born in Italy and studied first with her father and, subsequently, at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York. A precocious talent, she was elected to early membership of both the National Academy of Design and the American National Academy. Olinsky exhibited widely and with success throughout the United States including at sixteen annual exhibitions of the National Academy of Design where she won the Gloria Layton Prize in 1960. She also exhibited at the Allied Artists of America and displayed works at the National Arts Club in 1934, 1935 and 1937 and at the Carnegie Institute, where this painting was exhibited in 1941. She was also the recipient of a variety of prestigious medals, prizes and juried awards including the Jane Peterson Prize and, in 1957, the Lamont Prize at the Audubon Artists Exhibition. she was an elected member of the National Academy of Design, American Watercolor Society, the National Arts Club, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Lyme Art Association and the National Association of Women Artists We are pleased to offer this elegant still-life which was exhibited at the Carnegie Institute in 1941. Painted when Olinsky was in her early thirties, it shows both a monumentality of conception and an intuitive sense of texture.
