About the Item

‘Still Life with Flowers’ is a framed contemporary vertical oil on canvas painting created by Vietnamese artist Tran Luu Hau in 2006. Featuring a bold palette made of a variety of colors such as green and blue, accented with white, orange, red, pink and purple, the painting evokes the modern and expressionist use of colors made by the Fauvist movement during the very early years of the 20th century. Set inside a vertical format, the painting exudes an aura of joyous energy that, with no doubt, reflects the artist’s own emotions. The composition is closely centered around an exquisite bouquet of flowers that the canvas is challenged to contain. A blue vase, depicted on a yellow green background, receives a bouquet of flowers that seem to be bursting outside their blue outlines. The background, going from lighter tones at the top to deeper ones at the bottom, creates the perfect backdrop to highlight the bouquet’s vibrant presence. Set inside a silver frame, this large oil on canvas still-life painting, signed lower left, will enliven any wall beautifully, whether placed above a sofa, console table or enfilade. Tran Luu Hau was born in Hanoi, Vietnam in 1928 and studied at the Viet Back Fine Arts School between 1949 & 1954. Between 1956 and 1962 he trained at the Surikov Fine Arts Academy in Moscow. Returning home Tran became a leading member of Vietnamese art community and taught at the Hanoi School of Fine Art. In 1990 he retired from teaching to spend his days traveling and painting. His work covers a wide spectrum of subjects, from propaganda posters in the early 50’s to his still life pieces of the new century. Within that spectrum can be found landscapes, boats, nudes, flowers, gardens, towns and anything that caught his eye. Whatever the subject, Tran’s work is characterized by bright, bold colors, powerful strokes and succulent contrasts. With his blurred lines and viscous brushstrokes, it’s not difficult to see the roots of his style in the work of Matisse and de Vlaminck of the short-lived Fauvist movement in the early part of the century. This expressionist style – as opposed to a realistic style – suits Tran’s hand well as he suggests “What is important is to express one’s emotions” and that when he paints his goal is to convey “feelings”. Since retiring Tran has had solo shows around the world and his works can be found in numerous museums from the Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam to the Moscow Museum of Oriental Arts to the National Museum of East Asia Arts in Poland. His works are found in private collections around the world as well. Tran is also one of a small number of Vietnamese artists whose works are regularly sold at international auctions at Sotheby’s, Christie's and others.
