About the Item

Eckls lovely artwork shows a bouquet of beautiful blue-violet thistel in expressives strikes of charcoal. The composition is reduced to two colours, creating an intense impression. This stunning painting is characterized by its dynamic and the moving it exudes. Signed in the bottom right corner by V.Eckl. ARTIST: Vilma Eckl was born on June 26, 1892 in Enns. She attended the private painting schools of Berta from Tarnoczy, Rosa Scherer, and Tina Kofler in her subsequent longtime home town of Linz. The influence of German Expressionism, particularly the Munich based group "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Cavalier) and above all the Linz painting school of Matthias May, were formative in her artistic development. She died in 1982 in Linz. After her death the Lehner Gallery took over care of her artistic estate and has since held nearly twenty public individual exhibitions in Linz, Lambach, Enns, Salzburg, and Innsbruck as well as several presentations of diverse art and antique exhibitions (in Linz, Graz, and Salzburg). After the extensive exhibition of the Upper Austria State Museum to commemorate the artist's 100th birthday in 1992, the Lehner Gallery showcased a representative cross section of her work from various periods, which included works from both public and private collections shown in two year cycles and exemplified the artist's typical picture themes in a fine selection of charcoal and colored chalk drawings. She finally discovered charcoal and colored chalk as the most appropriate medium for her artistic expression because this technique best complimented the immediacy of her artistic intention, which included spontaneous gestural expression and her work in nature, especially with moving objects. Her boundaries for subject matter ranged from still life and flowers to the more seldom portrayal of landscapes to horses and circus led finally to the portrayal of human expression in its multifaceted forms of appearance. Themes such as "Mother with Child", "Meditation", etc. are examples. The portrayal of the working world took on a special role in her art, in particular the work of the peasants in their seasonal cycle. She often portrayed refugees and displaced persons and paid particular interest to painting the costumes that they wore at a variety of festivities (weddings, confirmation, etc.) and above all in emphasizing their underlying human emotion. Her work is sometimes compared to the work of Käthe Kollwitz, whom she substituted for at an exhibition in the New Gallery of the City of Linz in 1947. One of the most outstanding examples of Vilma Eckls? work is her portrayal of dance. Here as in her numerous other representations of the peasant work world (mower, harvest, etc.) her incomparable artist talent and her substantial contribution to art history is clear: the portrayal of movement. The extensive works of Vilma Eckls encompassed a time frame of more than seventy years and were recognized in two book publications (Bruno Grimschitz: "Vilma Eckl", Publishing House of the Gallery of Welz, Salzburg 1955, and Erich Widder: "Vilma Eckl " Character and Works", Upper Austrian State Museum 1965) and in a myriad of exhibitions both domestically and abroad. A few of the artist?s most distinguished life time achievements included the traveling exhibition the "Albertina" in Switzerland and the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937, the Austrian Exhibition in London, and the XXV Biannual Film Festival in Venice. The Cultural Prize of the State of Upper Austria and the City of Linz 1946, the ring of honor of the City of Linz 1962, and the Adalbert Benefactor Prize of the State of Upper Austria 1961 were awarded to Eckl as an ultimate tribute and honor. On June 10, 1982 the artist died in Linz shortly before reaching her 90th birthday.
