Painter, teacher and writer, Philip Leslie Hale is recognized for his decorative paintings of the female figure and for his interior scenes with figures as well as for his progressive approach to painting. However, his career went through several phases that included sporting scenes, figural studies of women including nudes, portraits, and allegorical works reflecting the overwhelming forces of nature. Of the Boston painters of his time, he seemed the most fully committed to Impressionism, and his technique suggests the influence of French impressionist Edgar Degas. In most of his paintings, the landscape was more important than the figure. He was a prolific writer in local newspapers and periodicals about the contemporary art scene, discussing the work of his Boston colleagues. He also wrote numerous books on art and art history including a study of Vermeer that was published in 1913. Among his writings are 1892 newspaper columns for Arcadia Magazine titled "Letters from Paris", art criticism for the Boston Herald from 1905 to 1909; and art criticism for the Boston Evening Transcript. He argued for the Boston School of Art as led by Edmund Tarbell whose style was based on Impressionism with elements of Realism, especially figure painting. Hale was born in Boston in 1865, the son Reverend Edward Hale, a Boston clergyman and a relative of Nathan Hale. He studied with Ellen Day Hale, his sister, and Edmund Tarbell at the Boston Museum School, with J. Alden Weir at the Art Students League in New York City, and then went to Paris for further studies at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He remained in France for fifteen years, returning to America about 1895. During that time, from 1888, he spent summers at Giverny, France with his good friend, artist, Theodore Butler, and became well acquainted with Claude Monet. Traveling throughout Europe, Hale visited the major museums, and copied the works of Ingres, Vermeer, Watteau and Michelangelo. Hale married Lilian Westcott Hale...

Stunning figurative landscape of the Mission San Juan Capistrano by Warren Eliphalet Rollins (American, 1861-1962). Presented in a giltwood frame. "Capistrano" lower right, unsigned. This is a study for a larger painting of the same scene. Image size, 14.5"H x 21"W. For many years Warren Eliphalet Rollins was known as the "Dean of the Santa Fe art colony." He was the first artist to have a formal exhibition there; it was held in 1906 in the old Palace of the Governors. He was a close friend of Carlos Vierra, Gerald Cassidy, Kenneth Chapman, Sheldon Parsons and most of the other famous artists who assembled in the New Mexican capital during the first half of this century. Born in Carson City, Nevada, Rollins was raised in California and attended the San Francisco School of Design where he studied under Virgil Williams. At the completion of his studies, he was awarded the Avery Gold Medal and made Assistant Director of the school. Following his marriage in 1887, he and his wife settled in San Diego, and it was during this period that Rollins became interested in the Indian as subject matter. In search of material, Rollins, his wife, and their two daughters, Ramona and Ruth, traveled through every Western state from the Mexican to the Canadian borders. Do you like fountains? Sylvia Gosse certainly did, as the location of this painting is the French town of Pernes Les Fountaines in Provence. The little town has 40 or more fountains, big and small, all serviced by the river Nesque. Gosse was a Camden Town/Sickert School artist and painted this painting circa 1912. It depicts a nocturnal landscape scene with three fountains. The fountains are beautifully illuminated with coloured lights and a large crowd on the banks of the water seem to have gathered to watch this spectacle, some having brought their own chairs. The coloured lights cast beautiful tones of pinky red on to the on lookers. Across the water and beyond a tree covered hill stands an impressive columned building. The vibrant colouring, impasto and brushwork are all superb. This is an excellent example of Gosse's work and Sickert's influence as her mentor and life long freind are evident. This serene Scottish Impressionist Edwardian coastal landscape is by noted Scottish artist Joseph Morris Henderson. It was painted circa 1910 and entitled Tiree verso. Tiree is the most westerly island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland and one of the sunniest places in Scotland as well as midge fee due to the stiff breeze. Tiree is a very popular windsurfing venue and sometimes referred to as the Hawaii of the north. In most years, the Tiree World Classic surfing event is held here. The exact location of the painting is probably Vaul beach. Henderson has painted the view from one side of the large sweeping bay, so one looks across the beach to the opposite headland. His palette of light turquoise blues of the sea is just beautiful with the dramatic blusterly clouds above the sunny beach. The brushwork and impasto as just superb. This is a wonderful sunny Scottish coastal landscape and a superb example of Henderson's work. Signed lower right. Provenance. Signed and titled on T. & R. Annan & Sons, Ltd., Glasgow verso. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 24 inches by 18 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a frame that compliments the picture, 31 inches by 25 inches and also in excellent condition. Joseph Morris Henderson (1863-1936). Born in Glasgow, son of the artist Joseph Henderson by whom he was strongly influenced. Studied at Glasgow University and Glasgow School of Art. His style absorbed much from romantic Victorian realism and he dedicated himself to landscapes, seascapes and coastal scenes. He exhibited throughout his life primarily in Scotland. He was elected an Associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1928 and a full member in 1935. He exhibited there from 1890 for nearly fifty years, exhibited approximately 80 paintings.
