About the Item
This is a very stylish portrait of a recent college graduate who is surely on his way to a successful career in the 1920’s. He is very well dressed with a pin-stripe shirt, coat and tie and breast pocket handkerchief. His blond hair is well combed and he exudes an air of composure and self-confidence. In the background, there is a partial column on the left side that may suggest a career in law, politics or academia. This classical device is one that was featured in many 18th and 19th century portraits.
Although not signed, the artist was clearly a professional portrait painter who knew how to use color, composition and a beguiling look to capture the viewers interest. By using a somewhat darker color palette for the background, the artist was able to have the subject’s face and upper torso feature prominently.
The oil on canvas measures 18” x 22” and is housed in its original wide, gold finished wood frame of the period. The overall framed dimensions are 26” x 30”. Both the painting and frame are in very good presentable condition, with no issues to report.
This handsome, well groomed subject portrait would easily grace the walls of any period, modern or classic space.
