Basquiat Gray vinyl record & poster (Basquiat Gray)
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Jean-Michel Basquiat Gray: Rare Gray 7" Vinyl Record Album featuring a limited photo card/poster of Jean Michel Basquiat and his band Gray at Hurrah's, NYC, 1979 by Nicholas Taylor of Gray. This set is from a limited edition of 300 and is likewise accompanied by a hand-signed photo card by existing Gray members Nicholas Taylor & Michael Holman. Record label uniquely features an offset image of Basquiat's fingerprint & Gray designed logo, which Basquiat originally created for a 1979/80 gig at CBGB. Published in 2018 from a sold out edition of 300. Dimensions: 7x7 inches (applies to each individual piece). Excellent condition. The 7" record single is new & unplayed. Numbered from an edition of 300 on the label. Includes two photo cards, band photo by Nicholas Taylor and a remix of Gray's 'Sweetness of the New'. A fantastic Basquiat collectible that should not be passed upon. More on Basquiat Gray, see Glenn O'Brien, "Gray Matters," GQ Magazine April, 2011: "Gray’s approach to music was having heard music, to approach instruments and sound systems the way one would pick up a strange machine and try to intuit its operation and function. Since Basquiat didn’t know guitar technique, it seemed like a good idea to play one with a steel file. Michael Holman discovered that you could achieve a very nice effect by pulling masking tape off the skin of a snare drum... And then there was the clarinet that Basquiat liked to walk around with, that was as much a scepter and wand as wind instrument. This utterly charming 27-track album is chock full of the road not taken, which sounds so right just now. It is refreshingly stripped of flagrant virtuosity but it is conceived brilliantly, played perfectly, and arranged impeccably... If a wine can have notes of chocolate, leather, licorice, and tobacco, then this record can have notes of William DeVaughn, Willie Hutch, Marcel Duchamp, Larry Coryell, the Modernaires, Sergio Mendez, the Tube Bar Tape, Chet Baker, Melvin Van Peebles, Gilberto/Jobim, and Dragnet." Basquiat Works on Paper Catalog
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Basquiat Réunion des Musées Nationaux exhibition catalog, 1997: A superbly composed & elaborate catalog of Basquiat drawings and works on paper published in 1997 by Réunion des Musées Nationaux, France. Features 85 beautifully illustrated color reproductions plus photos around the artist. Introduction by Dina Vierny and foreword by renowned Basquiat dealer, Enrico Navara. Soft cover. 9 x 11 inches. A fine impression in very good overall condition. Rare as such. Published by Réunion des Musées Nationaux (1997). Text by Bernard Blistène "The crown, the seal and the copyright - Notes on a black face soap". Biography and bibliography. (French-English) Jean-Michel Basquiat’s dramatic life and iconic paintings—which variously feature obsessive scribbling, enigmatic symbols and diagrams, and iconography including skulls, masks, and the artist’s trademark crown—make him one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. The self-taught painter embraced graffiti before committing to a studio practice. He found a mentor and friend in Andy Warhol, who helped the young artist navigate the 1980s New York art world. Across his oeuvre, Basquiat drew on his own Caribbean heritage; a convergence of African American, African, and Aztec cultural histories; classical themes; and pop cultural figures including athletes and musicians. The immediacy and intellectual depth of his paintings won him widespread acclaim both before and after his untimely death at the age of 27. Basquiat’s paintings now belong in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. In 2017, Basquiat’s Untitled (1982) notched $110.5 million at auction and became the most expensive artwork by an American artist to ever be sold. Related Categories: Basquiat ephemera. Basquiat Beat Bop Vinyl Record
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Basquiat Record Art: 2001 2nd pressing released in limited quantity. Beat-Bop, is a 10-minute track synthesizing various instruments and rhyming patterns, for which Basquiat produced and designed the original artwork for in 1983. Offset lithograph on double-sided record sleeve. 12 x 12 inches (30.48 x 30.48 cm). Minor shelf-wear, otherwise very good overall vintage condition. Record included in very good condition. Printed signature on reverse; from an edition of approximately 500. A very cool Basquiat frame piece if there ever was one. Further About: "Music, and jazz in particular, was crucial to Basquiat’s work. His art offered a vibrant visual counterpart to the emphasis on improvisation, non-linear structure and sampling in jazz. Basquiat’s paintings frequently celebrated his favourite jazz heroes, such as Charlie Parker, in much the same way that he paid artistic tribute to famous athletes, boxers and other personal icons, many of whom struggled to gain the recognition of their white counterparts. Equally key for Basquiat was hip-hop, the emergence of which paralleled Basquiat’s own artistic rise. In 1981, he made a cameo appearance as a DJ in the video for Blondie's chart-topping single, Rapture — the first rap video ever broadcast on MTV. He also produced a legendary hip-hop record, Beat Bop, a rap battle between MCs K-Rob and Rammellzee, illustrated with Basquiat’s own art. With original copies extremely rare, it has become one of the most sought-after rap records ever made." (Source: Christie's May 2017). Beat Bop was also exhibited as part of Basquiat retrospective Boom For Real at the Barbican in London. Related Categories Rammellzee. Basquiat Hip Hop. The Offs. Downtown 81. Samo. Tartown. Basquiat at Tony Shafrazi gallery 1996 (Basquiat Dust Heads announcement)
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Jean-Michel Basquiat A TRIBUTE: Important Paintings, Drawings, & Objects: Vintage original 1990s Basquiat announcement card to: Jean-Michel Basquiat at Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York, September 21 - November 23, 1996. Cover image features a reproduction of Basquiat's Dust Heads (1982). Off-set printed gallery announcement. 7.5 x 6.25 inches (folded closed). Very good overall vintage condition. Some light rub marks to reverse. Published by Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York, 1996. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Jean-Michel Basquiat’s dramatic life and iconic paintings—which variously feature obsessive scribbling, enigmatic symbols and diagrams, and iconography including skulls, masks, and the artist’s trademark crown—make him one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. Related Categories Basquiat Bruno Bischofberger. Located in NEW YORK, NY
Basquiat: Vrej Baghoomian gallery New York, 1989: Vintage original folding announcement card to Jean-Michel Basquiat at Vrej Baghoomian Gallery New York: 10/21 to 11/25, 1989. Pictured on front side is an image of Basquiat's iconic, 'Red Warrior.' A rare, highly collectible Basquiat ephemera piece that works well in any collection. Off-set printed gallery announcement. 8.75 x 5.75 inches (folded closed). Light signs of handling; otherwise very good overall vintage condition. Published by Vrej Baghoomian Gallery, New York, 1989. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Scarce. Jean-Michel Basquiat rose to success during the 1980s. Basquiat’s paintings are largely responsible for elevating graffiti artists into the realm of the New York gallery scene. His spray-painted crowns and scribbled words referenced everything from his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, to political issues, pop-culture icons, and Biblical verse. The gestural marks and expressive nature of his work not only aligned him with the street art of Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, but also the Neo-Expressionists Julian Schnabel and David Salle. “If you wanna talk about influence, man, then you've got to realize that influence is not influence,” he said of his process. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993. Related Categories: Basquiat Tony Shafrazi. Basquiat ephemera. Basquiat poster.
