Rebecca Ann Tess
"Template Selection #11", photography, abstract, architecture, power, exclusion

2018

About the Item

Rebecca Ann Tess created her series „Template Selection“ between 2016 and 2018 after she had travelled the world extensively since 2012. It is part of an artistic research that dealt with an understanding of architecture as a form of representation of wealth, power, influence, and competition (amongst international cities). The real estate industry attributes to some buildings the qualification “Alpha++”, thereby placing them very high in the respective rankings. All the buildings represented in the series “Template Selection” are ranked “Alpha++”. The whole series consists of 13 images of skyscrapers. Each photograph that ended up as a part of the series exists in two different sizes: 58,5 x 39 cm (framed: 59,5 x 40 cm – edition numbers 1-3/5 – priced at USD 2,600) and 117 x 78 cm (framed: 118 x 79 cm – edition numbers 4+5/5 – priced at USD 5,200). Each photograph is a pigment inkjet print, framed in a steel shadow frame, without glass. In case of an acquisition: the large version still needs to be produced (printed, framed). That prolongs availability by a few weeks. The photographs of the series „Template Selection“ show architectural close-up shots that have been taken in global cities like Seoul, Singapur, Hongkong, Shanghai, Chicago, and New York. The urban architecture is reduced to an interaction of light, form, color, and material, tending towards abstraction. Tess was treating the photographic image as if it was an abstract-geometric painting. By employing unusual camera angles or turning images to their side or upside down, Tess most widely negates the principles of construction and lets the mirroring glass facades become the reflecting object of themselves. They are made up from recurring elements of an architectural design catalogue that is limited and replaceable from the outset. “Template Selection #11” has been shot in Chicago. It shows the Chicago Federal Center, built in the early 1970ies by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Rebecca Ann Tess (* 1980 in Annweiler am Triffels, lives in berlin) studied at the University of the Arts in Berlin and later on – under the supervision of Judith Hopf and Willem de Rooij – at the Städelschule, Frankfurt a.M.. In 2012 she has enjoyed the Artist-in-Residence-program of the city of Frankfurt in Seoul, Korea. And in 2011 she has been the recipient of the Villa Romana Residency in Florence, as well as of the Balmoral Fellowship Residency in New York. She was profiting from the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes between 2006-8. Tess has shown in the in the Berlinische Galerie (2016), the MOCA Taipei (2013), the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (2013), the Neuer Aachener Kunstverein (2012 and 2010), the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul (2012), the Kunsthalle Mainz (2011), the Nassauische Kunstverein, Wiesbaden (2010), the Kunstverein in Frankfurt (2010), at the Videonale Bonn (2009), amongst many other places. Her works have been collected amongst others by the Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kultur (Münster), Helaba (Frankfurt/Main) and Villa Romana (Florence).
