About the Item

"Recorte #2" by Joana P. Cardozo is a geometric black, gray, and white abstract collage, featuring Matisse-like cut-outs of dogs, coffee mugs, and plants. From Cardozo's "Recortes" (Portuguese for 'cut-out') series, "Recorte #2" was put together using Cardozo's meticulous process of printing, cutting, and rearranging paper shapes on a scanner plate. These shapes, in turn, were sourced from photographic prints generated from Cardozo's previous series "Blueprints," in which she created 2D collages of people's homes with silhouette photographs of items found in each residence. By recontextualizing typical still life household items such as flowers, coffee accessories, and vases into new configurations, Cardozo's "Recortes" works—as exemplified by "Recorte #2"—yield abstractions full of texture, shadow, and visual intrigue. Her photographs create unconventional portraiture by examining the relationship amongst domestic spaces, their inhabitants and their objects. Her acrylic installations discuss the futility of human attachments in an impermanent world. Cardozo's work has most recently been exhibited at Texas Contemporary Art Fair (Houston), Foto Relevance (Houston), Klompching Gallery (New York), San Francisco Bay International Photo Show (San Francisco), and Rencontres d’Arles (France). Cardozo holds an LL.M. from King's College London (UK). She graduated from the International Center of Photography in 2015 and is an MFA candidate in Photography & Media at California Institute of the Arts.
