Pia Clodi
The Muse - Following Mozart's Inspiration & Music in a Photographic Journey

2019

About the Item

Not one to shy away from human representation, Pia Clodi’s more portraiture-like works continually offer the sitter an air of anonymity, and as such the viewer has the opportunity to project themselves, their loved ones or acquaintances through her photographic imagery. The blue tones within her work should not be interpreted as coldness, as her works are full of fleeting moments within her existence, and in fact invoke a warm sense of calm or nostalgia for simpler times. Taken during the MOZART series in London 2018 in collaboration with Leica and Heym Collections, the images gained new life in their ambiguity, which often stimulates the viewer to project their own thoughts onto the images objectivity. Taken on Polaroid, the process by which this photograph was originally created is reminiscent of much slower and earlier practices in photography, where precision can’t be guaranteed, but the surprise and fragility of what may appear on paper post-development is increasingly alluring to a contemporary photographer like Pia, who searches for unpredictability and chance moments in her life. This photograph is offered in the form of a limited edition print (one of 10 + the original Polaroid). Presented in a shadow gap frame. Pia Clodi’s works encompass moments and mementos from her countless walks through cities as well as naturescapes. These chances, between or during photographic assignments, to illuminate an object, a person or an instance, were quietly collected by Pia Clodi, on her SX70 Polaroid camera. An incredibly poetic practice, of passively capturing calmness and sensuality within otherwise lacklustre material and forms, enables Clodi to inject beauty in the everyday, and invoke nostalgia for quieter and slower experiences. Inspired by processes of creation, and early practices within photography, from the likes of Anna Atkins, Eugene Atget, William Fox Talbot and Louis Daguerre. Clodi’s work focuses on form and traces of life, over realism - whilst capturing stillness even through movement.
