Beau Simmons
Western Winter

2022

About the Item

Frame adds 7" to dimensions. Artist Journal Entry: "One of my favorite evenings while exploring these harsh winter conditions on the western side of the Teton range in Idaho. During a light snowfall and an exhausting hike through four feet of fresh snow, I placed my hat on this old fence post to capture this photo. The heavy fog danced through the trees and would every once in a while give way to the sun, lighting up the snow in a golden hue. The barbed wire was already stripped down to the bottom of the post and was covered in about a foot of snow. The old wood was splintering at the base and could barely hold itself up due to the weight of many winters in which it had endured. Large flakes blew in faster with every gust of wind and found their resting place on my hat. I stood there up to my waist in snow, my toes frozen, and my face covered in frost. After about ten minutes in the cold, I was stunned by the image that had created itself before me. A simple yet powerful composition that describes my vision of the west. A vision that turns into a passion for capturing authentic moments in efforts to preserve this way of life. For those who have come and gone and to those who are keepin' on. My hat is off to you." About The Artist: Beau Simmons has been a professional photographer since 2009. He grew up just outside Joshua Tree National Park, CA. He made a name for himself at 21 in the fashion photography industry working with clients including Marc Jacobs, 7 For All Mankind, Guess Jeans, and Converse. He was a go-to photographer for such agencies as Elite Models, IMG, and Ford Models. The fashion scene began to grind on Beau. Being a cowboy is in his blood. In this spirit, he decided to pursue his love for the western lifestyle and the wonder of the American landscape. Beau captures his artwork exclusively on film using the lost art of medium and large format film photography. Taking inspiration from masters of film photography like Kurt Marcus and Steven Shore, Beau finds passion in capturing some of the forgotten lifestyles of our time. By telling a story influenced by cowboys and the western culture, his body of work focuses on preserving authentic moments and documenting what might be referred to as a lost era in today’s society. His body of work is a collection of memories captured predominantly throughout North America. His commitment to telling an authentic story also includes working with American veterans and is on full display in his first feature coffee table book, The Twenty-Year War, that he created with two combat veterans, one of whom is his childhood friend. Beau is based in North Carolina but can usually be found traveling the United States, working on various ranches while capturing the western lifestyle.

  • Valley of Dust
    Located in Miami, FL
Frame adds 7" to dimensions. Artist Journal Entry: "The sun had just stuck its nose out from behind the horizon, warming up the cold desert morning in rich golden light. After checking on the cows and taking a routine head count, this photo was captured shortly before loading up the horses in the trailer. The simplicity in this photo creates balance while also allowing you to engage in the finer details. The weathered leggings covered in dust, the sweat all over the horse, its mane blowing in the breeze, and the lariat rope set back into position after a long morning of work. During the winter months, all of the vegetation dries up, giving way to a valley of dust. Days were spent often alone with nothing but the sounds of lowing from distant cows and spurs singing along to each step from the horse. A life not many can endure but for the ones that can, I salute you. This photo is dedicated to the men and women who represent this lifestyle and live it to the fullest." • Mojave 1975
    Located in Miami, FL
Frame adds 7" to dimensions. "Mojave 1975" Artist Journal Entry: "While working out logistics for my new artwork series, Mojave, this concept was one of the more challenging production sets to pull off. The final image you see here was only captured once on a roll of 120mm film. Weeks prior to this, I knew I wanted to have an old phone booth built outside of this classic diner while parking the car at the perfect angle to not block the cowboys staged in the backdrop. I didn’t have any idea what the location looked like in person nor had any time to scout before the day of filming. I had to work with what few images I could find online, various angles taken from Google Earth, and a notepad which I sketched on to give me a general idea. On set, we spent about an hour setting up the phone booth in the perfect spot, followed by adjusting the two vehicles at the correct angle. We used a 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 and a 1971 Ford F-250 Pickup. Once the vehicles were in place, I began posing the cowboys in the background and the two models last. Looking through my camera viewfinder felt like taking a step back into 1975. Everything fell perfectly into place. The styling of the outfits down to the props placed around the set. It was an incredible moment to have come to life with barely any reference to go off of. I hope this artwork takes you through a nostalgic daydream as it does for me." • The World Needs More Cowboys, Special Edition
    Located in Miami, FL
"The World Needs More Cowboys" Special Edition of 200 “The World Needs More Cowboys” Artist Journal Entry: "After working on a cattle ranch all day in west Texas, I gathered a few cowboys that I had been spending the past few days with and drove into the town of Alpine where this photo was created. I’ve had this vision for a while now and was waiting to find the perfect moment. This photo was taken just outside of a little bar in town about an hour shy of sunset. I walked in and spoke with the owner and asked if we could change the letters around on the old marquee sign out front. Without hesitation, he said absolutely and even shared some stories with us outside as we got everything set up. Growing up fascinated by cowboys and the western lifestyle, I looked up to these men and women who represented this culture. A culture dedicated to taking care of the land and its livestock no matter what. Caring for one another, enjoying a slower pace lifestyle with God and family at the forefront. Hard work, sacrifice, and humility are hard to come by. Putting everything above themselves in order to maintain a healthier life for others. A way of living we could all benefit from. In times like these, the world needs more cowboys." About The Artist: Beau Simmons...

  • The Four Aces Motel
    Located in Miami, FL
Frame adds 7" to dimensions. "The Four Aces Motel" Artist Journal Entry: "I have always been fascinated by the lifestyles surrounding the 1970s-1990s era. I grew up in the 90s in a small town located in the Mojave Desert in California. The nostalgic imagery captured back in those days has such a unique feel to them. With that in mind and other inspiration drawn from classic movies, I wanted to capture a series of images that reflected a 1970s story based in the vast desert surrounding my hometown. In this particular image out of the series, I wanted to create a scenario of a woman who just showed up at this motel in the middle of the desert in her classic 1971 Ford Galaxy. A place where cowboys and other drifters come together. Something that tells a story of how cowboys in the 70s could ride their horses up and stay the night. Where vagabonds could escape and call this place home for a night or two as they pass through town. I wanted to create an image that takes your mind back to this time period and gives you an idea of what an ordinary day might have looked like back then. This location is an actual Hollywood film set called The Four Aces. I contacted the owner and after an extensive interview process, receiving an LA County film permit, and production insurance, I was finally able to create a series of images that have been on my mind for quite some time."
