About

Very special photograph. Highly desirable. Children, Portrait, Migrant, Oklahoma The Lange has some conservation work done by Paul Messier. Owned since 2007. It is a spectacular print. Sometimes the improvement proper conservation makes to a vintage print can be dramatic, as is the case here. The print had been lifted partially off the mount at some time and re-attached. This was the main issue being treated. There were letters between some guy in FSA called Stryker and DL detailing her planning the story on migrant farm workers and submitting the prints to Life Magazine in 1937. This is one of the prints she sent. =Dorothea Lange. “We Come from the State Nobody Likes.” From Chickasaw Oklahoma. California, March, 1937. Vintage gelatin silver print. Image measures 7 7/8 x 7 3/8 inches. Trimmed and mounted to thin card. Inscribed on mount verso by Lange, “8C.” Inscribed upper mount verso in unknown hand: “Dorothea Lange from Resettlement Administration” and “RA 16300-E” Typed paper caption slip attached to lower margin, mount recto: “Ten children. 'We come from the state Nobody likes.' From Chickasaw Oklahoma. California, March, 1937” This print was made and submitted by Dorothea Lange with other photographs keyed to a layout and story for inclusion in Life Magazine. Life published only one of the images in the Spring, 1937 issue. Library of Congress catalogue number for this image: LC-USF34-016300-E Titled there: “Children of migrant agricultural workers in California.” Published (this print): Fortune, April 1939, p. 97, article on Migrant problem titled, “Along the Road”
