A 11" x 14" black and white photograph of Marilyn Monroe and Paula Strasberg, 1960 by Ernst Haas. The gelatin silver photograph verso (back) has Haas's copyright stamp, with annotations and estate stamp, and signed by the photographer's son. Printer: Robin Bell (London). During the filming of The Misfits, an American drama film written by playwright Arthur Miller, photographer Ernst Haas turned his camera on celebrity actress Marilyn Monroe to capture the star of the production without artifice, for a reportage on the set, shot in natural lighting, that ultimately reveals Marilyn Monroe as both a beautiful woman and complex personality. Through Haas's camera lens we are drawn in by the star and experience a very real and endearing Marilyn Monroe. A woman and actress capable of myriad emotions Monroe's personality becomes apparent, beneath the character she plays and beyond the posturing and expressions the actress mimes for the film. In 2021 the photography world celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Ernst Haas while film buffs saluted the 60th anniversary of the release of the film The Misfits. Haas was assigned to shooting behind the scenes on the set of The Misfits (1961), a groundbreaking production that starred Marilyn Monroe gifted actor and legendary sex symbol from the 1950s-early 1960s. Genius American playwright Arthur Miller wrote the original screenplay for The Misfits as a Valentine’s Day gift for his wife Marilyn. Directed by the great John Huston, Monroe won a “World Film Favorite” Golden Globe for her performance. June 1, 2021 marked the 95th birthday anniversary of actress Marilyn Monroe. Happy birthday MM! Haas moved to the United States in 1951 and began experimenting with Kodachrome color film. He soon became the premier color photographer of the 1950s. In 1953 LIFE magazine published his groundbreaking 24-page color photo essay on New York City. In 1962 a retrospective of his work was the first color photography exhibition held at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Haas was the author of four books: The Creation (1971), In America (1975), In Germany (1976), and Himalayan Pilgrimage (1978). Ernst Haas received the Hasselblad award in 1986, the year of his death.
