Giacomo Brunelli
Dogs St. Paul's

2016

About the Item

Giacomo Brunelli uses a 35mm camera and photographs from a low angle, which allows him to get up close to his subjects. Printing the images small and in black & white, and retaining the black borders with rounded corners, creates a timeless element to the works. Recalling 19th century cabinet cards, they take on a precious quality far removed from the photography we are used to seeing today. Giacomo Brunelli (b. Perugi, Italy, 1977) graduated with a degree in International Communications in 2002. His work has won the Sony World Photography Award, the Gran Prix Lodz, Poland and the Magenta Foundation "Flash Forward 2009". It has also been featured widely in the art and photography press including The Guardian, Harper's Magazine, Eyemazing, European Photography, B&W Magazine, Creative Review, Foto&Video, Images Magazine, Photographie, Catalog, FOTO, and FOTOGRAFI. His work is additionally in the collection of Museum of Fine Arts Houston, The New Art Gallery Walsall, Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts and the Portland Art Museum.

    By René Groebli
    Located in Santa Monica, CA
René Groebli (b. 1927) was born in Zurich, Switzerland. In the 1940s he studied under the noted photographer, Hans Finsler. In 1949 he secured his place among European post-war artists with his iconic portfolio Magic of the Rail. By the early 1950s, Groebli was working as a photographer for Life, Picture Post and other international magazines and participated in the first Subjektive Fototgraphie exhibition in Saarbrüken. In 1955, he was included in the Family of Man exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. "A number of years ago, a young Swiss photographer and his new bride made a honeymoon journey through France. In that romantic country they found that Eros attended even the humblest of hotel rooms. The photographer, René Groebli, chose to record this beginning event in their lives and in doing so, produced a series of sensitive photographs that are a tour de force in good taste." -On Groebli's series Eye of...

Lizzie Nichols and Perkins, 1913 15 x 15 inch gelatin silver print Image Size: 10.75 x 11 inches Frame size: 18 x 18 x 2 inches Edition of 15 Lora Webb Nichols was born in 1883 and grew up in the small mining town of Encampment, Wyoming. At the age of 16 Lora received her first camera and from that moment and for the next few decades she produced work that is both stunning in its singular voice and revealing in the world it opens up for us. At first Nichols photographed her family, friends, and the landscape around Encampment, but when the town experienced a copper mining boom Nichols expanded her scope to become a photographer for hire shooting portraits and industrial photographs. When the boom collapsed, Nichols took the risk of opening her own business in Encampment - The Rocky Mountain Studio - which opened in 1925. The studio ran for ten years, accumulating 24,000 negatives that illustrate the lives and environment of the people living in and around the town while creating a distinctive and surprising body of work. If one was to attempt an analogy – Nichols’ pictures fit somewhere between Lartigue and Lange - joyful and generous while objectively intimate. In particular what seems to distinguish Nichols’ work is the way she sees the world from a female perspective. As Vince Aletti...
