Giacomo Brunelli
Untitled (Cat in the bush) - Giacomo Brunelli, Nature, Photo, Cats, Animals

2005-2009

About the Item

Please be aware that the US recently imposed an import duty on photographs printed in the last 20 years which may apply if you are purchasing and importing this to the US. Like his subsequent projects, New York and Eternal London, Animals forces the camera to its limit; pushing the lens to reach its ultimate focal point, the animals Brunelli chooses are depicted between soft and clear focus, which lends them that captivating cinematic quality for which his work has become known. Brunelli started photographing animals in 2005. Finding them in backyards, farms, and fields, he captures that instinctive moment of reaction triggered by his presence. Whether angry, ignorant, or sleepy, the animals respond to him and together man and animal present an inimitable moment whose dramatic intent is enhanced by the suffused light of hazy days and atmospheric pressure in which Brunelli shot them. Brunelli shoots uniquely on black and white film with a 1960's Miranda Sensomat 35mm. The process of shooting on film, especially changing the film after the 36th shot, he says, causes you to slow down and breathe in fresh thoughts. The same thing happens in the darkroom, too, where you open yourself up to the unexpected during this unique printing process.

His more famous subjects included the likes of Marc Chagall, Le Corbusier, Audrey Hepburn, and Albert Einstein. Art historian H. H. Arnason, who ranked Lipchitz with Picasso and Marc Chagall, wrote, "Lipchitz, as a pure sculptor, is ...unquestionably one of the greatest sculptors of this century." The architect Philip Johnson asked Lipchitz to make a wall sculpture to be placed on the brick chimney over a fireplace of a guest house owned by Mrs. John D.
