About the Item
Warren Beatty (b.1937) dropped out of Northwestern University to study acting with Stella Adler. He made his film debut in Elia Kazan’s Splendor in the Grass (1961). In 1967, Beatty teamed with director Arthur Penn to make Bonnie and Clyde, the real-life story of two Depression-era bank robbers co-starring Faye Dunaway. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Beatty received his first nomination for Best Actor. Jack Robinson photographed Beatty on August 8, 1967, just as Bonnie and Clyde was hitting the screens, and the Vogue feature describes the film as “grim, funny, completely absorbing.” Beatty is described as “hell-on-wheels and vibrant with savvy” . . . “Natural elegance, that’s what this cat’s got.”
