About the Item

Joseph Beuys (12 May 1921 – 23 January 1986) was one of the most influential German artists of the second half of the 20th century. He also was a teacher at the “Kunstakademie Düsseldorf” and a theorist of art with high influence in the international contemporary art. As a professor he tought students like Sigmar Polke, Anna Herzfeld, Jörg Immendorff or Blinky Palermo. He was one of the founders of the “Fluxus” art movement and famous for his happenings and performance art by combining various media and techniques including paint, sculpture, graphic art and installation. His work is grounded deeply in concepts of humanism, social philosophy and anthroposophy with open public debates and in his definition the art has a creative and participatory role in shaping society and politics. With his multiples (around 500) Beuys had the idea to give a wide public access to his art, by producing it in high and not too expensive editions. Brigitte Müller-Fehn (1941), better known as Zoa, is from the 1970s on a freelanced phtographer who was a student of Umbo. In the 1970s she published a series of phtographies of Andy Warhol and Joseph Beuys. Beuys and Warhol first met in 1979 in Düsseldorf, Germany and the later that year again New York where Beuys installed his Retroperspective in the Guggenheim Museum. They became two unequal friends; Beuys for whome every single detail has a meaning and Warhol who says that there is no deeper meaning behind his works. The shaman and the dazzling pop star. Schellmann) Nr. 407. Only nine of this 50 prints are signed by Andy Warhol. ZOA captures this two famous artists in this photo in their usual habitus. Warhol in shirt and tie with his distinctive glasses and Beuys with his hat and vest. ln May 1979, Andy Warhol and Joseph Beuys met for the first time in Düsseldorf, Germany. About seven months later, the two met again in New York. This meeting led to the "click" (Beuys) between the artists. Warhol took over a hundred Polaroid pictures of Beuys, which he later reproduced in prints. The artists travelled specially for this almost historic event and gave interviews, each in their own way, the shaman and the star, united in their contrasts. Of the 50 pictures in this edition, only nine were signed by Warhol, as his assistant interrupted him while he was signing them at an opening in Germany and pointed out to Warhol and the surprised gallery owner that signatures had not been arranged and would cost extra. Although the photo is by ZOA, Beuys appropriates it for himself through his signature and publishes it as a multiple, as he did with many photos by third parties.
