Louise Dahl-Wolfe
Coco Chanel Leaning on Chair in her Apartment, Paris

1954

About the Item

Louise Dahl-Wolfe was born in California. After her first photograph published appeared in Vanity Fair in 1933, she moved to New York and opened her photography studio. Her early documentary portraits of rural America gave way to an established career as a staff fashion photographer for Harper’s Bazaar. Dahl-Wolfe was at the forefront of early color fashion photography and accompanied her timelessly elegant photographs of high fashion in the 1940’s and 1950’s with a sophisticated naturalism and celebration of a more athletic and spirited woman, and she was later credited by Richard Avedon as one of his most lasting influences. Dahl-Wolfe died in 1989.
