The Back of the Hand of Joshua (Joshua Tree II)

2016

About the Item

Archival Black and White Pigment print, from an Analogue Negative, Framed in a white Shadow box fram “Joshua’s Hand” reaches into the sun despite the rays of heat beating down on its bark. One can only be left wondering how life finds a way to survive in such an arid landscape. But like any form of life, we all find a way to grow and new paths to take. These paths run parallel to the Joshua Tree’s branches, as we all stand at the trunk reaching out for our next step. Whether the fractals of our paths and these branches are planned or unplanned is up to you. The only certainty is that there are infinite paths to climb, which will you choose? WILD TREES Throughout all of human existence trees have served people throughout the world not only physically but also symbolically to represent what words sometimes cannot. The wild trees represented in our exhibition go beyond the simple architecture of roots, trunks and branches. Each photograph holds its own universe of complexities and metaphors, not meant to be taken as a literal translation of a reality but a complete interpretation. From the dancing silhouettes of the Flaming Birch to the sun beating off the bark of the Boab tree, every tree has its own history beyond the rings of its trunk. ABOUT THE WORK Nicolas Auvray relies on traditional photographic materials to capture the extraordinary atmosphere of tangible realities. Whilst stopping for a moment, he tries to reveal something almost nonexistent in scenes that will stimulate or highlight one’s senses, emotions and past experiences. Rather, he would like through his work to render a world enormously complicated into simple forms and call unto our emotions to understand - or rather feel the situations and more importantly imagine and build a story from the clues and elements captured in the image. Sometimes the aesthetic approach can seem to verge on the romantic, but inevitably there are many contrasts, voids and counterpoints or details for us to feel completely comfortable and stimulates our sense to rediscover the space around us. He tries to accentuate the narrative and emotional power of the images as he believes that a non-documentary photography can best convey and prompt human emotions and senses and above all, our imagination. ABOUT THE ARTIST Nicolas Auvray was born in France. After several years living in various countries around the world, he moved to New York in 2005 where he currently lives. For his work, he uses analogue cameras (medium and large format) and prints primarily in the traditional darkroom in Paris and in New York. His work is collected internationally in public and private collections, including the BnF collection (Bibliothèque nationale de France). For the Artist, the printing process is akin to the interpretation of the negative, and a full part of the creative process. This is an opportunity to see, enjoy and acquire work made with this increasingly rate medium, especially at the large formats. Michael Light Golden State Freeway Looking Southeast Over Fernando Pass, 2004 Image Size: 40 x 50 inches Frame Size: 42 x 52 x 2 inches Edition 3 of 10 Signed and editioned on verso Artist Biography - Michael Light was born in 1963. The pre-eminent aerial photographer of his generation, he is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship for photography and his work is in the collections of major museums from SF MoMA to the Victoria and Albert. Prior to taking up aerial photography, Light conceived of and put together the book Full Moon - the first look at NASA photography as fine art - and a project which was published in multiple editions selling several hundred thousand copies around the world. In a way Full Moon had a bearing on Light's subsequent aerial work, as he continues to see and explore the terrestrial world much as the astronauts saw the moon. For the last 15 years Light has been flying his own small aircraft primarily over the American West investigating how both man and nature make their mark on the landscape. To date Light has completed 18 separate Western projects - each of which comprises an oversize handmade artist's book as well as more traditional prints. Largely documenting the impact of man and industry on the land (but not immune to the sublime) Light's subjects range from Utah's gold and copper mines and the (over)development of places like Sun City, AZ and Lake Las Vegas, NV to contrasting Arizona's Meteor Crater - the largest meteoric impact site in the Americas - with James Turrell's Roden Crater...

Marie Navarre find us soon, 2020 archival digital print on Surface Gampi, Rives BFK 25.5" x 25" unframed 28.75" x 27.75" framed Edition of 5 Marie Navarre’s deep interest in poetry, especially the Japanese form of Haiku, has had a profound influence on her work. She conjures dreamlike images that appear to be from just outside the realm of human observation, like the fragments of a distant memory. She prints her mysterious and timeless images of flocks of birds, grey sky and shimmering endless horizons unmoored from specific times and places, then hand stitches over a background of Gampi paper—a soft, silky Japanese paper that has a satin-like sheen. These enigmatic photographic constructions document the implications of a moment rather than its actuality. The artist understands that her relationship to photography is complex: “I have this trouble of being a photographer but wanting to make the photographs into something else. I still think like a photographer even though in some ways I’m sabotaging the way that photography works. I still begin my artmaking process by making pictures. I don’t know how to begin without the photograph.” At play is the tension of a fixed medium documenting a world in movement. Navarre has a BA, MA and MFA from Arizona State University. Her work is collected nationally and she has received a number of awards including a Capp Street Project Residency Grant in San Francisco for her collaboration with Jim Campbell...
