The Hand of Joshua (Joshua Tree I)

2016

About the Item

Archival Black and White Pigment print, from an Analogue Negative, Framed in a white shadow box frame. “Joshua’s Hand” reaches into the sun despite the rays of heat beating down on its bark. One can only be left wondering how life finds a way to survive in such an arid landscape. But like any form of life, we all find a way to grow and new paths to take. These paths run parallel to the Joshua Tree’s branches, as we all stand at the trunk reaching out for our next step. Whether the fractals of our paths and these branches are planned or unplanned is up to you. The only certainty is that there are infinite paths to climb, which will you choose? WILD TREES Throughout all of human existence trees have served people throughout the world not only physically but also symbolically to represent what words sometimes cannot. The wild trees represented in our exhibition go beyond the simple architecture of roots, trunks and branches. Each photograph holds its own universe of complexities and metaphors, not meant to be taken as a literal translation of a reality but a complete interpretation. From the dancing silhouettes of the Flaming Birch to the sun beating off the bark of the Boab tree, every tree has its own history beyond the rings of its trunk. ABOUT THE WORK Nicolas Auvray relies on traditional photographic materials to capture the extraordinary atmosphere of tangible realities. Whilst stopping for a moment, he tries to reveal something almost nonexistent in scenes that will stimulate or highlight one’s senses, emotions and past experiences. Rather, he would like through his work to render a world enormously complicated into simple forms and call unto our emotions to understand - or rather feel the situations and more importantly imagine and build a story from the clues and elements captured in the image. Sometimes the aesthetic approach can seem to verge on the romantic, but inevitably there are many contrasts, voids and counterpoints or details for us to feel completely comfortable and stimulates our sense to rediscover the space around us. He tries to accentuate the narrative and emotional power of the images as he believes that a non-documentary photography can best convey and prompt human emotions and senses and above all, our imagination. ABOUT THE ARTIST Nicolas Auvray was born in France. After several years living in various countries around the world, he moved to New York in 2005 where he currently lives. For his work, he uses analogue cameras (medium and large format) and prints primarily in the traditional darkroom in Paris and in New York. His work is collected internationally in public and private collections, including the BnF collection (Bibliothèque nationale de France). For the Artist, the printing process is akin to the interpretation of the negative, and a full part of the creative process. This is an opportunity to see, enjoy and acquire work made with this increasingly rate medium, especially at the large formats. Lightning/Cotton Field, limited edition photograph, archival, signed The adrenaline of seeing Mother Nature during some of her finest moments will be ingrained in me forever. It is a humbling experience - and I feel fortunate to have witnessed her power and grandeur over the past 12 years. My experiences are hard to describe in words During this last trip (July 2021) we traveled over 6400 miles in 10 days crossing through 10 different states - all in my quest/passion to photograph these storm systems. But this time the events of the last year made me more aware, opened my eyes wider, and had a different effect on me. The effects of Climate Change have become obvious. The current patterns are changing and they are accelerating faster than anyone realized or predicted. Just over the past decade, the characteristics of the Jet Stream and the Gulf Stream...
