About the Item

Rara Avis is a contemporary archival inkjet print by artist Cassandra C. Jones. Jones’ digitally composited images read at first as botanical drawings. Upon closer examination, one realized that this work is made of the pink, white and red flamingo's bodies that over lap to create petals and their long legs form stems. The wallpaper-like floral pattern blooms from a kaleidoscope of fluorescent pink flamingos posed like their plastic counterparts. The pattern of pink flowers that dissolve into their background. Framed beautifully with a simple clean white frame and glass. According to Jones, "Rara Avis is a series of compositions and wallpaper patterns that are composed photographs of real pink flamingos that are reminiscent of their retro plastic counterpart, the lawn ornament. This particular collection of photographs led me to wonder, is it possible that an item of now historical kitsch might influence the picture taking of the real, live thing? After all, Americans are much more familiar with the nature of the stylized, fluorescent version, than the actual bird itself. As well, I have found that one of the most common snapshots taken of a wading flamingo, indeed, to be the profile of the bird's long curved neck and down-bent bill. Rara Avis also speaks to the relationship between Americans and nature, how nature is commonly brought into the home in safe and often artificial ways such as lawn ornaments and floral wallpaper. Relating to the tendency of taking and viewing photographs as a surrogate for actual experience." Cassandra C. Jones is a remix artist who collects thousands of other people's photographs, in both print and digital form. She then organizes them in various ways [via video, collage or installation] that tell stories about human observation and the power of photographic imagery in our snap-happy contemporary lifestyles. The results are strange, transformative and often poetic collages that are meticulously arranged to illustrate woven patterns, reimagined wildlife, floral arrangements and geometric shapes. Cassandra C. Jones lives and works in Ojai, CA. She is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with an MFA in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts, and received her BFA from California College of Arts with a concentration in Photography/Glass. Through her exploration of digital photography and large-scale collage works, Jones offers a space of possibility, growth, and discovery. Jones has been awarded artist residencies in Germany, the Czech Republic, Canada, and across the United States, and her work has been exhibited both nationally and in Europe.
