Half Light 8 is a stunning Digital C-Type print on Fuji Maxima Matte Paper. This is Edition 2 of 7 plus 2 Artist's Proofs.
Ellie has been working in the forests of the UK for the past seven years, producing work which explores the complex interrelationship between the landscape and the individual.
In Half Light, Davies explores her relationship with the forest, and her ongoing attempts to reconnect with the wilder landscapes of her youth. Half Light was also born of a desire to discover whether those remembered and imagined places from her youth could ever be recaptured, or whether, like childhood, they exist only once.
This body of work in particular leans heavily on the human relationship with the land. The stronger emphasis on those still, dark waters only contrasted with verdant traces of vegetation dissects the natural space and creates an invisible barrier that separates us from the twilight forest beyond our gaze. And so, those placid waters become the metaphor through which we see our own distance from the natural terrain.
In Half Light, Davies shows the inherently constructed nature of landscape. Imbued with so many layers of symbolism, we have no choice but to impose our own interpretations on the land before us. As we are so distanced from nature itself we can no longer have a really immersive relationship with it. Now, we can only see it through fantasy, imagination, and as an idealised version of what we once knew.
