ABOUT: Pelican Finn, a reference to the subject’s name, broadly illustrates the relationship between individual and environment while specifically capturing a Cuban American woman’s relationship to the Florida Everglades, a world heritage site and the largest wetland on earth. Shooting through the intense and wild conditions inherent to the setting, Schilling creates a magical, dreamlike world that captures the untamed spirit of both the Everglades and Finn, who was introduced to the Everglades in flight from Cuba to the United States for the first time. The exhibition brings together Schilling’s portrait, figurative, and landscape photography. For the series, she used a vintage Yashica twin-lens reflex (TLR) camera and 120 film, creating vivid, crisp, and colorful images. Vibrant greens and blues, pervasive in the aquatic landscape, saturate the work. Including a few images in black and white, Schilling cites Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa among her inspirations. In the invitation piece “Gator Hook,” Finn’s reflection cuts clearly through soft disturbances in the water’s surface, which mirrors the giant expanse of blue sky surrounded by blooming cypress trees. Wiry, untamed branches frame either side of her body. Her face disappears into the water, leaving only the outline of a cowboy hat and a hint of orange sleeve to distinguish her torso from the surrounding nature. In another image “Loop Road” depicts Finn leaning backward into the sunrise. The sun glows through dark palm fronds, suffusing the image with warmth and enveloping her in yellow sky. The series was inspired, in part, by Michael Grunwald’s The Swamp: The Everglades, Florida, and the Politics of Paradise, which chronicles the destruction and posits the possible resurrection of the Everglades. Schilling manages to weigh the balance among newness, discovery, and optimism with the precariousness and uncertainty of nature and the threat of loss without slipping into the pedantic mode that too often accompanies an immigrant narrative, or falling prey to a conservationist’s zeal. A Miami native, Schilling (b. 1987) is a self-taught photographer. She began her practice in photojournalism at the Miami Herald with the support and guidance of Patrick Farrell, and the spectrum of her work now includes reportage, portrait, commercial, architecture, and wedding photography. She holds a degree in visual anthropology from the University of Florida, Gainesville. Color, Women, Nude, Portrait, Water

The invitational image, Bourrée, depicts a woman suspended in soft hues of blue, floating upward as if ascending into the heavens. In Arabesque, the model seems to tumble gracefully through clouds, arms outstretched. Olson’s color images are surreal and mysterious. In most of the images there are refractions of light and bits of clouds that blend together, leaving us feeling as if we are looking at watercolor paintings. Olson describes Rapture as, “a biography of my dreams.” This series represents, for her, the world that lies just beyond consciousness—where “time shifts, gravity loosens and we slip into another realm.” Through the images she conveys the dreams she’s had since childhood of floating weightless in the sky. In reality, Olson photographed them from above in swimming pools in Seattle, Washington combining images with clouds photographed mostly in North Dakota, where she grew up and visits each summer. The effect is ethereal. Her models could be construed as angels. Olson’s entrancement with the medium spans over 30 years, starting in 1980 when she did a series of swimmer images while in graduate school at the University of Oregon. In the Rapture series, despite each image’s balanced composition, Olson claims the process of photographing women...

    By Sophia Milligan
    Located in Penzance, GB
'Towards Your Heart' Limited edition archival photographic triptych. Unframed, hand signed and numbered (Edition number 3 of 25) _________________ It is not the size Nor power from which you fly But towards your heart The wild Atlantic explodes in raw abandon, given scale in this daring dance by the graceful flight of the sea bird. Sophia's poetic photographs are an exploration of the balance in all things: in the sensual interplay of light and shadow; in wild raw energy and serene stillness; in chaos and harmony; in the enduring and the effervescent. They are a contemplation of the awareness that everything in existence is temporary, they speak of the ephemeral nature of all things. Moments, feelings, experiences cherished and appreciated in their impermanence, for that is where the beauty comes from. 'I work in a balancing act of control and freedom; of discipline and guidance, whilst simultaneously relinquishing all authority and throwing the odds to the winds, to chance encounters and the unexpected'. Photographic triptych: each of three parts measuring 30 x 20 inches. Each printing is bespoke to order and can be printed on a single paper 30 x 60 inches.
