Igor Ponosov Photo series "Between The Walls", 2021 Digital print from negative film, mat (picture framing), grommets, wooden frame 40 x 30 cm Igor Ponosov (b. 1980) is a Moscow-based artist, curator and researcher, co-founder of the Partizaning movement, author of books on urban art and recipient of the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art’s grant for young artists (2012–13) and the Sergey Kuryokhin Contemporary Art Award (2016). In his artistic practice, Ponosov strives to diversify viewpoints and methods, with his urban works conceptualizing the context which they have been placed into in either critical or poetic manner. In his studio the artist creates works on paper and collages, using objects and materials from the streets – advertisement billboards and trompe l’oeil building wraps, which he embellishes with fixtures and fittings and metal frames that are reminiscent of structures for mounting billboards and allude to their connection with the urban landscape. Recently, the artist has been focusing on identifying the boundaries of the personal and the public. Ponosov interacts with the urban space through performative practices and outdoor interventions – he blends into walls, buildings, windows, or merges with the landscape in a metaphoric expression of urban environments absorbing an individual. This work from the artist's solo show "Participant Observation". The project defines Ponosov as a researcher of the urban environment, where his role is not limited to recording phenomena but extends to active participation in producing an alternative view of the city. This is reflected in the artist's appropriation of urban objects, his rethinking of Moscow’s ‘construction aesthetics’ through photography and bodily practices. This approach makes Ponosov a ‘participant observer’, a part of the everyday life he constructs, the fragments of which were displayed in the show at Syntax Gallery. The show encompassed the results of the artist’s long-standing study comprising a series of observation photographs and artefacts removed from the urban environment, which have been processed into collages and objects. By juxtaposing media and objects – building mesh and billboards, fragments of advertising images and slogans – Ponosov reveals the paradoxes and contrasts of the surrounding environment and brings them into the dimension of art and poetry. The viewer finds themselves inside the creative experience, participating in observing how the city shifts around them.
