Nicholas Kahn & Richard Selesnick
The Dark Rider: Modern Surrealist Photo, Skull Masked Man Flying Over Landscape

2012-13

About the Item

archival pigment print, edition of 5 10 x 10 inches unframed, 17.5 x 17.5 inches framed This modern, surrealist style photograph was printed by the artist duo Kahn & Selesnick in 2012-13. The print is part of the Truppe Fledermaus series that explores the chronicles of a the traveling circus group dressed as bats, skeletons, and other odd creatures that perform for animals and mythical beings along the countryside. Here, two members of Truppe Fledermaus are pictured traveling to their next destination across a barren landscape blanketed with sea grass and sand dunes. A skull masked man dressed in an old-fashioned grey vest and beige blouse flies a brown robed bat-like creature while waving a black top-hat in the direction of their departure. A clear blue sky extends into the background. The dark brown hues of the two characters creates interesting contrast against the blue sky and green landscape. The imagery depicts an imaginative narrative and encourages the viewer to continue the saga in their own minds. The pristine archival pigment print is complimented with a clean white frame measuring 17.5 x 17.5 x 2 inches. About the work: The ultimate storytellers, who have been showing with Carrie Haddad Gallery for more than 20 years, are Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick of Kahn & Selesnick, who met at Washington University in St. Louis in the 1970’s. Their initial collaboration started in Truro, MA with real film and a box camera, (that belonged to Kahn's father and was actually used during the war), a real darkroom, stacks of cotton rag paper, and a xerox machine set on sepia tone. The first few series documented an invented history about “The Royal Excavation Corps” and their experiences with a shaman, experimental wings for solo flying, psychedelic honey and all sorts of adventures shot like an old movie. Eight series later, Kahn & Selesnick now shoot with digital cameras and alter them on the computer. The results are stunning and still have the appearance of an era long ago. One of their most interesting series, Truppe Fledermaus (Bat Troupe), explores magic realism and documents a group a performers dressed as bats, “greenmen” and “death dancers” who wander the countryside performing only for animals. There are many hand-made elements in Kahn & Selesnick's work—imaginative costumes, stage sets, carved clay bat heads and figures, as well as drawings.

  • Clam Shells (Still Life Photograph of Purple & White Shells with Drift Wood)
    By David Halliday
    Located in Hudson, NY
Still life photograph of purple and white clam shells on pale grey and beige background archival pigment print, made in 2007 by David Halliday 10 X 15 inches unframed Edition of 25 In this series, Halliday captures the beauty of 'the ordinary' in still lifes of various objects and vegetation arranged against simple backgrounds. This nautical themed still life of deep purple and white clam shells beside a piece of drift wood is set on a light grey table top against a cream colored wood wall. The subtle color palette extenuates the various textures and gentle shadows cast on the objects. About the artist: American, b. 1958, Glen Cove, NY, United States, based in Schodack Landing, NY, United States Elegant still lifes bathed in natural light, so masterfully composed one could forget that it is, in fact, a photograph – this is how we’ve come to recognize David Halliday’s work. The artist first gained recognition for his sepia toned silver gelatin prints of common place objects and food staples, emphasized by sublime balances of form, texture, and shadow one could liken to classical painting. In more recent years the artist began embracing his subject matter with modern pops of color in surreal arrangements; vegetables and fruits eccentrically coupled with fish nets and cutlery balanced on undefined tabletops, seeming to float in midair. Now the photographer is retracting his lens to encompass the studio itself as his subject. In a self-portrait of sorts, Halliday skillfully combines elements of his craft in a modest interior view. Halliday was one of the first artists Carrie Haddad began representing when she opened the gallery 27 years ago. Since then he has exhibited nationally and in Europe. He now lives and works in Schodack Landing by way of New Orleans and Nantucket.
