About the Item

Matthieu Venot creates playful and crisp architectural images, both of his hometown of Brest (Northern France) and also other cities such as Dunkerque, Montpellier and Lisbon. His aim as a photographer is not to create large oppressive images but instead to give the day-to-day urban fabric that surrounds him a freshness and unexpected quality. He crops building parts out of context, focuses in on architectural details or isolates certain building features and therefore creates strong geometrical compositions that have a life of their own. Balconies and staircases, for example, shed their utilitarian role to become two-dimensional flourishes while in other images, façade segments lose their scale to become graphical abstractions. Matthieu began working with the bright blue sky of Brest - using it like a backdrop in a studio. His Dunkerque series subtracts this sky into something greyer and more sinister. Matthieu received an Honourable Mention at the Independent Photography Awards in 2016 in the category Architecture: Industry with his image Industry: Sans Titre 2. His work has been featured in many publications, including It's Nice That, Yatzer and Ignant and he has passionate collectors and followers all around the world who are drawn to his distinctive style.
